This may sound like a stupid question, but are there any sound cards which will output a surround signal via the digital out or is the only way to get surround in games the analog outputs of a sound card?

actually almost all of the current release of sound cards, including the onboard sound (sound integrated with the motherboard) come with s/pdif (digital coax) connectors, there's even a few that come with optical outputs.
oh and there is NO such thing as a stupid question. . . just stupid answers [IMG]

Many current soundcards/mobos have an S/PDIF & Toslink out but they are for DD/DTS movies or 2-channel PCM only. [IMG] To play a surround game you need a sound card with 5.1 (or more) analog outputs.
If there is a new inexpensive card that encodes DD 5.1 on the fly please share with us. [IMG]

If you want DD on the fly encoding than you will need an NVidia NForce motherboard.

yeah the motherboards with onboard soundcards using the new line of nforce2 motherboards (the ones that use the mcp-t chipset and soundstorm) can incode in DD5.1. only problem is that you have to buy a new motherboard lol!

If the game supports "Dolby Surround", it will matrix-encode a mono surround channel into the main two channels, which the optical/coax should pass through.

Some of the Sound Blasters do 4.0 through a digital DIN interface, but you need a Creative (or Cambridge Soundworks, same company) sound system with the corresponding connector.

For 5.1, you'll need one of those new motherboards.
