chu, thanks for the pointers.
As a matter of fact, I have two dedicated 15 amp circuits that go to my HT room. I have all of my rack equipment connected to a Monster HTS3500 pOWER unit and itself plugs into one of the dedicated outlets and then I have another dedicated outlet for my NEC front projector mounted in the ceiling/attic which is on a Hospital grade outlet.

I will give my electrical company a call to see if they have any program like this and also call the appl.engineer at Intermec to have some questions answered.

Peace!

I have an unusual question... can using surge protectors degrade the audio or video quality of our components?

In one of my periodic fits of responsibility, I thought it might be wise to protect my equipment with a surge protection. So, I have an extra APC surge protector ("performance series" I believe) that's primarily for office/computer equipment, and used that. I swear I thought it degraded the sound. Took it out of the system, and it seemed to me that the sound improved. We're talking subtleties here (but aren't we always?), but it really seemed to have a deleterious effect. Could this possibly be true?

Yes. Imagine plugging in your AV system, then hooking up a car-battery trickle charger in the same outlet. That is what most UPC's are. Not a problem for digital equipment, but analog circuits dont work as well.

The op's article was well-written, but I am also totally confused.

My "entertainment center" is very simple. I have a small tv, two ~ $100 dvd players, a vcr, and a laptop computer.

I was ready to buy one of the surge protectors pictured here:
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatSecti...&Section_Id=71
I priced some of them at http://www.pricegrabber.com , and I can get a nice one for $30-$40.

In reading the part of the op's article that I excerpted in the quote, is he basically saying that I am *not* receiving adequate protection with this type of product ?

I looked up the products offered by AdCom and SurgeX:
http://www.adcom.com/surgesupressors/ace615.htm
http://www.surgex.com/products.html

*Then* I looked up the msrp: ~ $600!!!

I could not in a million years at this time justify spending that kind of money for this nor could I afford that kind of money for a surge suppressor. $40-$50 is the maximum that I can afford to spend on a surge surpressor.

So if I can't afford one of these $600 items and if I am not getting sufficient protection from of those Belkin type surge suppressors, *what* am I supposed to do ? My impression of the excerpted part from the op's article is that he is saying that buying a surge protector like one of those Belkin ones is throwing one's money away.

No, it's not necessarily throwing your money away but it works a whole lot better when you first go whole-house. You know Matt, a lot of this is a crap shoot. Depending upon where you live (some areas are just more prone to surges because of the weather) and what you've got to spend is going to dictate how you're going to play the odds. No one can tell what your comfort level is. Only you. Why don't you just start a separate thread and maybe we can explore this.
