I was surprised to see the following numbers which show SACD titles by Record Label:

    Majors
    ---------
    BMG 39
    EMI 66
    Sony 496
    Universal 292
    Warner 8

    Top ten
    ---------
    Sony 496
    Universal 292
    Telarc 111
    EMI 66
    Octavia 61
    PentaTone 59
    Linn Records 41
    BMG 39
    Chesky 39
    Concord Records 37

Sony actually has released more than Universal which I thought would be the other way around. I think this demonstrates that the Sony support is more global in nature since we are obviously seeing less in the U.S. Some of the audiophile labels have released a huge number of recordings as well.

Just thought some of you might find this interesting.

This doesn't show the full story since support is not equal across all divisions of music labels. For instance, Japanese divisions tend to offer many more releases.

The numbers I came up with merely shows the number of titles released by each Universal label on a worldwide basis. As for the level of support, it's hard to determine since the size of each label and the depth of its catalog varies.

Actually, I'd love to see a title count for Sony that breaks down by year.

Universal is a late comer to the game and already has ~60% of the titles that Sony does even though Sony has at least a 3 year headstart. I suspect that Universal has released more titles than Sony over the last two years.

It is painfully clear that Universal is the most aggressive major at this time in releasing High-Res titles in both formats.

I'd love to see a title count for SACD and DVD-A mainstream pop/rock, the genre that is needed for any format to reach Lee's predicted 'tipping point'.

So Michael, you're saying that audiophile releases which sell in the 10,000 copies level isn't going to do the trick.

    Sacrilege, I tell you [IMG]

As everyone knows, I decided a while back that SACD looked to stay a niche format.

I'm quite happy with that. In fact, I have more titles to buy than I can afford. [IMG]
