Agreed with the comments, enjoyed the second episode. I didn't realize it really is the end for Calista Flockhart. I thought she'd be recurring perhaps on an Illregular basis. I totally forgot about Jimmy till he showed up at the end!

I wonder what the legal specifics are with Superman appearing on this series. Anything to do with the film version? I have not watched Batman v Superman yet, but based on the film Man of Steel, this version of the TV Superman is soo much better.

Just viewed the first two eps of the second season back-to-back and all I can say is "Wow!!".

And I have to agree with the general consensus that this is the best depiction of Superman since the first two Superman movies released in 1978 and 1980. (Why did it take so long to get the character right again??). And I *loved* that they had at least four different references to those movies in the first episode!

For a sheer fun live action superhero show I didn't think anything could top last season's Supergirl/Flash crossover, but this *doubled* the enjoyment of that ep right out of the blocks!

One comment on Kara's new boss: It looked like they wanted an Ed Asner clone, and got pretty darn close!

I'm guessing that DC doesn't want to waste one of their most popular characters as the supporting character in someone else's show. I think they'd rather see Superman get a new show of his own.

I doubt it has anything to do with the movies which seem to live in their own universe. There is going to be a different Flash in the upcoming Justice League movie that doesn't have anything to do with TV's Flash.

Agree with all of it. I spotted the Crisis pose reference which the CW had put on that poster. A really fun 2-parter. I wouldn't mind having a regular Superman show on Friday nights :)

Interesting that they use Snapper Carr in the show. He was the Justice League's "mascot" back in the 60s. I am looking forward to seeing how the show evolves this season. I'd like the Cadmus storyline to be resolved before the end of the season, but I suspect that it will drag on and only finish the season finale.

Here's what EP Andrew Kreisberg told Entertainment Weekly: "They’re the big bad of the first part of the year — a second big bad will emerge later in the year — but they’re dedicated to eradicating alien life on Earth."

So it sounds like Project Cadmus will be the big bad through the midseason finale, and then another threat will emerge for the back half of the season.

That's a relief. Maybe the CW is learning something from those awful Arrow seasons which dragged on with the same big bad throughout the whole season.

I thought it was kind of odd casting to have Brenda Strong as the Cadmus mad scientist. It took me a while to place her as I kept thinking I know her. Then I realized she was the infamous character from Desperate Housewives; Mary Alice. Maybe she's been in other similar genre shows which I've not seen. But it seemed out of place to me.

She was also the deceased matriarch of the Brown family on The WB's "Everwood" (from Berlanti) and played the queen of the Ice Nation on the most recent season of "The 100" (one of The CW's midseason shows).

THAT's where I knew her from. Thanks for that. It was driving me crazy.

Not all that impressed with Lynda Carter as the President (even with her surprise secret), but I did enjoy some of the twists and turns in the episode. Are they setting up a potential romance with Supergirl and the alien from the rival planet?

Clearly Kara has had no formal training in journalism since it's Journalism 101 about never inserting personal opinion into a hard news story.

Generally, this show is at its weakest when it's at its most heavy-handed with the allegory, and this episode wasn't an exception. The president's big plan for amnesty toward extraterrestrials in the shadows as a stand-in for illegal (human) immigrants in the shadows was at best inartful, with lots of telling instead of showing. Likewise with the alien bar as a stand-in for the gay bar scene.

And the show took an unfortunate page out of "The Flash" handbook, and had Kara behave impulsively and stupidly because the plot required her to, something the first season got better and better at avoiding.

The episode was also a to-be-expected letdown after the two-parter with Superman himself.

But for all my complaints, there was a lot to like, too; the proper introduction of Mon-El was well handled. It's nice to have an alien that's in-between paragons of virtue and altruism like Supergirl and Superman, and the usual villainous aliens like this week's firestarter. Here's a guy who's just trying to call a taxi to take him home; he not trying to save the world, but he's not trying to destroy it either.

Maggie Sawyer was well-cast. Even though Floriana Lima's younger than Mehcad Brooks and only a few years older than Melissa Benoist and Jeremy Jordan, her version of Maggie feels like an adult woman in a cast of young people still living out their coming-of-age stories. And it's nice to give "Supergirl" a local police contact, something that was arguably long overdue. It sure did seem like the show was paving the way for an Alex/Maggie romance. I wouldn't be opposed to it, since they had oodles of chemistry this episode, but I hope it doesn't eat up a lot of screen time. Romances are just not something the show needs to spend time on, especially if Kara isn't in the relationship.

The one exception I'll make is J'onn J'onzz and M'gann M'orzz, because there's a lot of fertile ground to be explored with discovering that you're not actually the last of your species.

Not all that impressed with Lynda Carter as the President (even with her surprise secret), but I did enjoy some of the twists and turns in the episode.
I loved every moment she was onscreen, even the shameless and at times fourth-wall-breaking winks to her past as Wonder Woman. Was it a great performance? No, but when you get Lynda Carter to play the president, that's almost beside the point. She just naturally projects the necessary gravitas, and at 65 she still looks absolutely amazing. The reveal at the end that she herself is a shape-shifting alien was a nice twist, which opens up a lot of different storytelling possibilities.

Are they setting up a potential romance with Supergirl and the alien from the rival planet?
If I had to guess, I'd say they're using him as a second chance for Kara to be the kind of mentor that she was supposed to be to Kal-El, helping him integrate into human society and establish a life on Earth.

Clearly Kara has had no formal training in journalism since it's Journalism 101 about never inserting personal opinion into a hard news story.
Yes, that was headscratchingly ignorant, only somewhat explained by Cat handing her this opportunity without making her mistakes in journalism school or putting in the time in the trenches at a much smaller market publication. Funnily enough, the writers of the episode should have taken Snapper's advice as well. Every time the show clumsily tries to comment on real world controversies and political stances, I cringe -- even when I agree with the point being made.

It was also laughable that Jimmy would assign Kara to interview the President of the United States as her very first assignment. That's something that you have to earn, and work up to. Walter Cronkite had been a reporter for nearly three decades, including coverage of a world war, before his interview with JFK in 1963.

I liked the episode, especially Carter. Though she was never a strong actor, she was good as the President, she still looked and sounded great too. I love the other jet line:). I don't mind allegories based in real life issues as long as it's not too heavy handed. The Aliens as illegal Aliens story could be worth seeing.

The Alien Bar was an interesting addition, I'd like to see more of it in future episodes. The possible Alex/Maggie relationship that was hinted at sounds intriguing. I never though about Alex dating, too much action going on. I'm interested in seeing how it might play out. A possible hook up between Kara and Mon-El sounds good too. It looks like they might have good chemistry based on their scenes tonight.

I think the Kara as a Reporter story line makes this show feel more like a Superman series now than ever before. I wish she had taken a different job. Cat was really missed this week. I've seen cranky bosses like Snapper a lot more than characters like Cat, plus she and Kara played off each other really well.

I enjoyed the episode.

The News scenes were a weak point.

Did love seeing Carter. And speaking of nods, I loved the way Supergirl extinguished her costume - by spinning

I actually thought when she said that - wow - is she actually playing an older Wonder Woman? I mean it's still the DC universe....

It was a very good episode, and the show continues to be very progressive -- Hank's comments about people not liking that which is different and referencing being in the body of a black man for 15 years were potent. And the Alex/Maggie relationship certainly seems poised to happen.

The newsroom scenes didn't work very well. Snapper Carr is the only real journalist on the show -- they should listen to him!

I enjoyed Lynda Carter as the president and am intrigued what they have planned for her character. (Have we seen the president in the Arrowverse shows? Is it a man or a woman?)

Melissa Benoist continues to be the most valuable player on the show. She's great in both her scenes as Kara and as Supergirl.

His personality is SO different here than the role he played on Cougar Town. I had no trouble forgetting about his earlier performance.
