I've always adored John Candy and he's definitely the draw here but I've never been a huge fan of this one. Though it's leagues beyond the other vacation film he did a few years later with The Great Outdoors, a movie I've never cared for. Still, Summer Rental has its charm and Rip Torn IS fantastic, but I've always found it to be just "ok.". But as you said, I can think of worse ways to spend 90+ minutes. I just wish there were better extras for this one, but then again this IS Kino after all..

I worked at Paramount when this came out. It was an early film greenlit by the legendary Ned Tanen - who took over after Eisner/Katenberg went to Disney (though the film was developed by the EK regime.) Tanen was the Brat Pack guy - and he liked youthful, inexpensive films and wanted the studio to get back on its feet with some product - as opposed to some really poor performing big budget period films during the last years of the EK regime such as Lady Jane and King David - and this was one of them along with Reiner's Summer School. This is a sweet film. It's never quite as funny as it should have been but it's an easy movie to enjoy. It does have a couple of very funny scenes on the beach. John Candy just made you smile. It's odd that Reiner chose to do these as he was coming off some critically acclaimed and ambitious films with Steve Martin.

the cast was fun and Candy, the perfect set up for some painful comedy, and I say this with tongue in cheek. And best reflected in Rip Torn's noble line about Scully's Catch of the Day!!! It's fun, light and predictable...and well received in these weird times!!
