Suggestions on how to get odour out of Area Rug? (1 Viewer)

My parents recently got two huge rugs from my grandparents. They are new, but were kept inside plastic bags for a LONG time. The thing is they have a very 'musty' smell to them (or some would like to call 'old people smell'), and my dad cant get it out.

He's tried airing it out in the sun outside, no dice.
He tried that sprinkle-on powder where you vacuum up, all it did is leave a pungent stink of artificial flower-scent.
And last he tried Febreze, it did a bit, but not alot.

Anybody ideas/suggestions on how to get rid of the smell from the rug?

STEAM CLEAN...either have a professional do it, or rent one of those portable steam cleaners and try giving that a whirl.
