friend of mine is looking to buy a 32 or 34" HDTV, looking for any advice and/or good deals

he's looking to spend around $1,500...but he's willing to spend a bit more if it's worth it

I have the 34" Toshiba which you can now get for about $1800. It is a direct view set with a great picture. I think it's definitely worth the money, and if this is the size your friend is interested in, one he should consider. The Sony is much more, and I don't think the picture is any better.
