    OK, it's everyone's favorite sport.

    Here are my key needs:

    1) A high quality 5.1 analog pass through for SACD/DVD-A (I am an audiophile, you see). I am not as concerned about the quality of the stereo pass through.
    2) Must have Dolby II, but I don't care about EX, X or any other 7 channel features. I had a Harman Kardon for a while, and preferred DPII to Logic 7.
    3) Must be black in color (ruling out Halo, Aragon, etc).
    4) Upsampling and new DACs would be nice, but I am particularly concerned about the analog circuitry.

I was thinking about the Rotel 1068, Adcom 880, Fosgate FAP, or possibly a used Anthem or Bryston 7.1 (although that's a lot more money).

    Any opinions.

I would add the B&K ref50 to your list.

I have the NAD T163, and it excels in analog, much more so than digital processing, for which it is pretty good, but not quite as defined as a Denon 3803 I was using as a pre-pro. But in terms of playing CD's and SACD's through the analog inputs, with 2-ch and multi-, it's very rich, warm, and full....all in all, very musical and a major step up from the Denon.

I should mention that I have 5 identical speakers in an ITU configuration, so a lot features and flexibility in delay, crossover points, etc is not what I need. Plain jane DD and PLII, along with a good analog section is what I'm looking for.

Another possibility is the Audio Refinement prepro, which should have a good analog section by its pedigree, every review says it sounds good for the money, perhaps better than the Rotel. The ads for it claim that it can be upgraded to a newer Motorola processor that does PLII, but I've never heard of or seen one advertised that had this upgrade. Anyone know if this upgrade is real?

I heard they had an upgrade for that as well, but I don't know.

I do agree that every review on the AudioR piece said it competed with the mid level pieces in 2 channel.
It doesn't have all the bells and whistles though that others have and reviews have said it was a little to basic with the setup options.

The B&K piece can be had for just a bit more and it should be close in performance as well as give you a bunch of more goodies to work with.

    Just my .05 cents.

Will add the Integra 9.4 and second the NAD. Haven't heard the new Rotel yet, but that would probably be on my list too.

If you're not scared by budget gear take a look at the new prepro from Sherwood Newcastle. The analog pass-through for both stereo and multichannel was a strong point of the predecessor, the 9080, and I'd assume the same would apply to the new prepro. Nice upsamplingfunctions too I think and high quality Burr-Brown DACs. Worth considering.

The new version Pre2-DSP has been on the market for a couple of months and the MSRP stayed the same, $1395. Check Audiogon, several vendors are selling it.

Find a TAP-9000ES for your SACD/DVD-A usage and get a $300 receiver with preouts to handle DD, dts, DPLII...

I hope you sold it for a LOT. No one box solution of that quality is going to be cheap.

I sold it for more than I bought it for...
So which of these units has the best mc analog passthrough? I guess opamp choice and analog implementation would be most important here? Anyone look inside these things?

I've been really impressed with the pass though on my Rotel 1098...and its incredibly flexible as far as set up options etc.

A friend of mine in NJ is selling a mint, 1 year old Aragon Stage One. Asking price is 2100. PM me if you are interested.

Sound & Vision measured the Stage One's analog section --- 0.003% distortion...about 1/10th the S&V measurement for most prepros and receivers (which are ~ 0.02% or higher)!

Here are some Sound & Vision LAB results. The Anthem, Sunfire, and Aragon were compared in the same write-up.
    1) AC3 NOISE LEVEL on 16bit Signal (the larger the negative the better):
    Sherwood 7108 -68.5 ($300 receiver)
    Yamaha rx-v730 -67.7 ($599 receiver)
    Sony DA4ES - 74.9 ($999 receiver)

    Sherbourn PT-7000 -72.4 (Outlaw 950 clone)

    Anthem AVM20 - 75.2 dB
    Sunfire TGIII - 75.4 dB
Aragon Stage One - 75.6 dB

    2) MULTICHANNEL ANALOG Inputs - Distortion (1 kHz at 200mV)
    Sherwood 7108 0.05%
    Yamaha 730 0.03%
    Sony 4ES 0.02%

    Sherbourn PT-7000 0.02%

    Anthem 0.05%
    Sunfire 0.02%
Aragon 0.003% (one tenth the distortion level!)

    3) MULTICHANNEL ANALOG Inputs Noise Level (A-wtd re 200mV) The larger the negative the better.

    Sherwood 7108 -74.5 dB
    Yamaha 730 -80.4 dB
    Sony 4ES -79.2 dB
