I have been looking to replace my AR s112ps sub recently. The specs on it are:
BLACK finish matches any room decor
    Driver Complement: 12" Long-Throw Woofer
    Enclosure Design: Multi-port slot loaded
    Frequency Response 30 Hz - 200 Hz +/- 3dB
    Crossover adjustable 40-200Hz
    Amplifier Power 120 watts RMS
    Nominal Impedance 8 Ohms
    Enclosure Dimensions 16" H x 16" W x 15.75" D

I have been mainly looking at the 25-31pci. I am not sure it the girlfriend will approve it though so I need backups just in case.
So what are some suggestions in case I get the big NO on the svs. I am looking at same price area so $600 is limit.
I know people have mentioned the HSU VT-2.
Can anyone give me a list of maybe 5 comparable subs to the 25-31pci in the same price range. THANKS!

You need to make her understand why you are replacing it. . .Why are you replacing it??
What is it you dont like about your present sub? Dont get hung up on numbers, find one that you like the sound of the best on known material.Chances are she will hear, better than you, what you are trying to do and help you with it.

I recently got a great sub from Aperion Audio. It's been getting a lot of good press and is very wife/girlfriend friendly since it has a sweet finish and very subtle/musical qualities to the bass it produces.

There is no comparable subs in that price range. Not saying you wont find a sleeper or DIYer out there somewhere but there is not a mass market sub IMO at this price point that will hang with the SVS.

My point being is if she won't ok the svs heater my options are only box style...so that leaves me with hsu vt-2 or the new svs box coming out with the same driver/amp as the 25-31pci. or the Adire's Dharman.

    Any ideas/thoughts will help.

I have seen way too many half-ass HT systems due to WAF, my wife was the same way, would not stand for all those black boxes cluttering up the room, wires all over etc. But in the end her ears are better than mine and I end up with what I want because she likes good sound, in the late 70s I sold my 5K seperate system and got a little cute receiver with a couple of small bookshelf speakers and she didnt like that either. It is a good thing because it takes some of the impulse buying away, I have to work harder to justify the purchase, if it sounds better she hears it and does her part making room, still catch hell about untidy wires, but thats a good thing.
Put on your salesman hat and demonstrate what it is supposed to sound like, I mean you are 50% of this thing not 49 not 51 make your 50% stand.

You do make some great statements on the whole thing. Sometimes the waf think this whole hometheater thing is too much. They don't understand why you need all this stuff.
From what everyone says in almost any of the postings related to the 25-31pci it seems as though that is the only way to go. So I guess it will be between the 25-31pci and the new svs box coming out with the same driver/amp as the 25-31pci. I guess I will make a decision sometime in Jan hopefully.
    Thanks for all the responses.

Sorry for the soapbox, seems I made the rounds the other day preaching, wasnt my intention. I was trying to describe what I have to do, I am certainly not in a position to be telling someone else what they need to do, I know it is not that simple.

Yeh, I wear the pants in my house, but that don't count for much because she wears the boots and I'll get my a** royaly kicked if I don't ask! :b
    Guy:
You make some real good points, and they are fair game in my book. If they have any intrest in sound at all, thats half the game. In that case, I think your personal technics could be very useful in finally pulling it off.
But when the foot comes down=boot at my place, for what ever I want, thats it...NO means NO [IMG]
Latest NO, up grade Yamaha to H/K-520 or 525 for the bedroom... Ain't happen, at least not for awhile!
    Chad:
Hopefully SVS will get (at least a few) of the box style subs up very soon. It will make life allot easier for many here, for whom the BOOT RULES....
    Cheers
    Geoff

Well about a year ago I bought all new speakers over a month. About 2 months later I bought a new receiver also.
The key is my birthday is coming up and maybe I can convince her on that.

I was just going to show her a close up pic of the 25-31pci and say what do you tink of this I just ordered it but I think I will say I am upgrading my subwoofer and selling my old one which one is acceptable for you "look wise". I am going to remind her that when we move all the stuff will be in the basement/Home theater room so it shouldnt matter what it looks like...but it may since it will be in our living room for the time being.

I have the 16-46 PCi and it really doesn't look terribly bad stuck in the corner with a wreath on the top.

When my wife first saw it she rolled her eyes and told me that it wasn't going in the living room, but once we started watching movies...

Get it and figure out a way to hide it. You must have a corner you can put a couch or plant in.

    Hey,

I resent that "cute little receiver" remark! My receiver
ain't cute and it ain't little! (The UPS man's hernia is
    proof of that!)

    LOL

I agree about WAF though, thank GOD I am not married!

Anyone who buys a sub should also get a good parametric EQ such as the BFD. It will add about $120 to the cost of the sub and another $20 in Radio Shack cables and adapters (RCA to 1/4" phono plug), but once set up it is amazing how much cleaner and less boomy the bass becomes.

You know what I find removes Boom?
I just sat back and was listening to my system that I rewired
    last night..
I was running my mains Bi Amped off the Receiver (100 watts
per channel) and a seperate 2ch power amp (100 watts per
channel) and I decided to forgo the receivers amplification
and use the 2channel amp to power the HF side of my mains
and then I took my 500 watt RMS Caver Sunfire amp for my
D.I.Y sub, and I wired the 10" woofers in my mains series
and connected them to my Sunfire, set my mains to small
(80Hz Crossover in the receiver) and set the sub's variable
crossover at 80 and WOW it sounds so much better!
But since I am feeding it so much more power on the LF side
then ever before I noticed some boom in certain ranges
comming from the rear firing Port (Bass Reflex) I tool some
of my Parts Express Acoustic Foam (full sheets) and sat
them on the wall behind the port of the sub.
    Guess what? BOOM GONE!
I agree though the BFD is a great product... I just ordered
a Behringer Ultra Tube-Q lastnight which is like the BFD
only it works on the full spectrum. It has a notching and
shelfing filter and covers low pass, mid band and high pass
in parametric fashion plus it has a built in Tube Stage
using 2 12AX tubes with adjustable tube sound gain, and the
    tubes are completely defeatable.
I can't wait till this toy gets here.. I am going to run
some RTA's of my room see where my dips and peaks are and
then equalize flat.. I think I am "damn" close by ear.. I
may have some overattenuation in the HF side, I think my
rear wall is reflecting a bit (a nice hanging tapestry would
    do wonders)
Ohh what fun this is! [IMG]
