Subwoofer Driver Replacement (1 Viewer)

Is it an easy operation to replace the drivers of a powered home subwoofer? How would you know what would be compatible with your particular amplifier and if it would sound good? Can subwoofers designed for cars be used in place of the paper-coned drivers in home subs?

There are a lot of factors to consider before doing this. For instance, how would the new driver operate under the same internal volume, among other things.

Lots of things to consider. What are the specs of the driver you're considering? Will the volume of the enclosure work with it? Is it a powered sub? If so, what about crossover frequency and filters? Let us know the answers to these and we can give you a better answer. One other thing, as a general rule, cars subs don't work well in a large room and paper cones aren't necessarily bad.

Many inexpensive home subs sound bad as much because of the cabinet as because of the driver. So changing the driver won't necessarily bring about a dramatic improvement in performance.

Give us as much information as you can including the current sub type/model, maybe some specs if you have them including the internal volume etc. If you want a boost in performance, you may actually need to consider making your own sub, perhaps from scratch. If this is the case, you could not have come to a better place than this. Many people here can guide you on this path if you so choose.

you guys took my question too seriously... which is a good thing... but I was just curious about my subwoofer's far-future upgrade possibilities and was definitely not intending on taking on such a detail critical and involving project like transplanting a subwoofer any time soon. I didn't know so many things were involved in the composition of a subwoofer! I will probably renew my interest in this subject when I am older and more involved in home theater and my hobbies, but for now, consider this post null and void.
