On my Toshiba 2107, the chapter titles on Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters (i.e. "god she's beautiful," "Dusty just bought this huge house in South Hampton," "the abyss," etc) have French subtitles under them. This of course is not the way the film is. The disc requires going back to the main menu to change or turn off subtitles, and no matter what, the subtitles pop up again.

This is not unlike the recent Holy Grail problem, except it doesn't happen during dialogue, just for a few seconds on all the various episodic white-on-black titles.

    Anybody else have this problem?

No need to apologize! I'm glad it might just be my old DVD player. Has anyone else seen this problem? I just tried it again, made sure all subtitles were off, and there they were again on every transition title.

    Coressel,

    just out of curiosity,

does the DVD have English subtitles? If so, choose English audio and english subtitles in the menu, then start the film and turn the subtitles off. Does it still happen?

You also might wanna check in your player's setup if everything is set to english (audio, subtitles, menu language)

    Chris

    Christian,

Yes, I've gone back to the main menu and set all subtitles to off... I even set them to English once to see what would happen and the French still appears. I'll check my players settings again.

This is the only disc (besides Holy Grail) that pops up subtitles at odd moments. But again, with Hannah it only happens during the between-scene title cards.

    'Tis strange...

No sign of this behavior on my Panasonic or Sony players.

"The French is even displayed when the English subtitles are on??"

Yes, it's actually pretty hilharious. I'll keep playing with it and see what happens. It could just be my old DVD player going nuts.

    Thanks for your help.

To Coressel: I had the same problem, and couldn't get rid of the French titles on the chapter headings. At least it doesn't happen during the movie. It must be a older-model Toshiba problem.

Actually I figure Woody Allen would've liked the French titles - they make the movie more European-looking. Now if they were Swedish titles he would have REALLY been happy.

Bill, thanks! I'm glad to know I am not alone.

I plan on getting a new DVD player soon anyway, so I'll see if that does it.

Sorry, no problems on my Tosh 3108 (and normally if there's ever a DVD problem to interfere with a Toshiba, it would be on this player)
