I noticed when I got my first DVD player, a panny RV32K, that there is a sub out on the back. Why would one ever need to use that when all AV receivers that I have ever seen have sub or lfe out?

Jim, I believe it would be used if someone had a powered sub but no A/V receiver or speakers.
