I bought a 12 foot AR sub cables at best buy about a year ago. I've noticed that my sub makes a humming noise. It wansn't till I moved that I found it to be the cable. I put on a cheap radioshack 12 foot RCA cable and the hum stopped.

By staying with the cheap cable, am I loosing quality? Cab't really tell any loss...

No. Any signal loss going to the sub as a result of differences in gauge are going to be trivial and compensated for when you calibrate anyways. It's not like you're losing any information because all you're passing is 120 Hz or less. Sounds like the AR might've developed a problem in the shield.
