A local used everything store that also carries some import anime product here has a Studio Ghibli box set that has 14 studio ghibli films on several discs (can't tell how many) the packaging is still sealed, very slick and professional looking, it's a new import, and the back says 16:9 and english subs, there's a note on the back put there by the store that says they are Japan dvds, but the owner didn't know about the return policy on import dvds if they aren't compatible with your dvd player. This looked to be a pretty impressive, legitimate set, it had Grave of the fireflies, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's delivery and Princess mononoke among several other studio ghibli films.

I love Grave of the Fireflies to death (have the region one dvd), and really enjoyed Princess mononoke and kiki's and am wondering if this is a rare find in the states (having just read about the disney embargo), and if it will work with my dvd player. I have a pioneer 503, and someone else on the hardware board claimed that it seemed to work with all region dvds. The price for the set is 127$, is that a good deal?

Thanks for your help, I'm new to multiregion dvd, but hope to end that soon. I'm moving to LA in the fall and building a new computer with dvd player enhanced for multiregion.

It's a bootleg, probably by Anime Cartoon (Manga) International. They specialize in pro-looking boots

There are no authorized Studio Ghibli Collections on DVD(we have this direct from Tokuma Shoten)
Anything with Chinese&English subs, ESPECIALLY IF IT'S REGION 0 be suspicious

99% of all anime is region coded from Asia that isn't a bootleg

OFFICIAL STUDIO GHIBLI RELEASES

Released in Region 1,2 and 3

My Neighbor Totoro (Japan(Buena Vista),Taiwan(Buena Vista) Hong Kong(IVL)

Kiki's Delivery Service-(Japan(Buena Vista),Taiwan(Buena Vista) Hong Kong(IVL)

Porco Rosso-(Japan(Buena Vista),Taiwan(Buena Vista) Hong Kong(IVL), France (????, OOP)

Whisper of the Heart-(Japan(Buena Vista)

Princess Mononoke-(Japan(Buena Vista) US-Miramax,Taiwan(Buena Vista) Hong Kong(IVL))

Grave of the Fireflies- Japan-Warner Bros, US-Central Park Media (may be more licensed versions)

July- Sprited Away- Japan(Buena Vista)

September- Laputa: Castle in the Sky- Japan(Buena Vista)

The legit Ghibli titles from Asia come in white(Japan) or Clear(HK&Taiwan) Amaray 2disc flippy cases (the slim ones)

Disc 1 contains the movie with an anamorphic transfer(except HK Porco Rosso). The second disc contains the entire storyboards timed to the audio with usually a single audio track. Trailers are also present

I suggest you inform the shop that these, and any other Anime Cartoon International products are nasty bootlegs, and that it is illegal to sell them in the US. If they refuse, call 1-800-NO-COPYS

Oh, and the street price on that set in Hong Kong is approximately $25, if that.

I can see why you'd be easily confused. The packaging is indeed very professional-looking and had I not known already, I would've assumed they were official releases. I see these popping up at comic books shows everywhere, but they are indeed bootlegs. I don't know how the average consumer would know the difference if they don't hang out in forums like this.

They're probably struck from the Japenese LD box set which was called "The Studio Ghibli Collection" or something like that.

The LD box set is the "Ghibli ga Ippai" (Ghibli's Best) Collection. If you look on the Japanese/HK/Taiwan DVDs, you'll see the little logo on the boxes
