It's really the strangest thing. I have a Sony DVD player that is probably approaching 3 years old. I know it's time to probably just retire it, but the strangest thing is that it plays movies just fine. But if I try to watch special features, it skips around, and gives funny video output. It was doing it on Wizard of Oz the other day. So when I got Star Wars today, I watched completely through Episode IV without a bit of problem. Then I put in the "making of episode III" featurette, and it started jumping around occasionally. Not all of teh time, but occasionally. Do they encode the special features differently than movies??

And it's not all special features either, I can watch through nearly all of my Superman and LOTR special features just fine, but others like Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, and Harry Potter give me lots of trouble. Yet, the movies Wizard of Oz, Star WArs, and Harry Potter play fine.

try getting a lense cleaner, I still have my 7000; the 1st player sony sold and it works like a champ without a problem.
By hitting a few buttons on remote, I can bring up the service menu and realign the laser. You might look into that and see if you have that option

I ended up just buying a new DVD player to replace the old. I tried to clean the lens on the old, to no avail. In speaking with the individual who sold it to me (a local independent retailer who I have always trusted), he said that alot of the older players are having problems with some of the newer DVD's, particularly the bonus discs. There is so much information, and the way the menu systems work behind the scenes (for ex. the new Star Wars with all of the weblinks, as well as an entire level for an XBOX game), that the new players just can't handle all of the information. I bought it, don't know whether it's true or not. But I'm happy now

In conjuntion some what with what the retailer told you. These newest players don't really handle the oldest most basic DVD's anymore... lol

The Great Escape, can weird out more than a few of the newer players. It has no Chapter Search, no menu's whatsoever. It takes like 5 min to load up on my new Zenith DVB-318, but does eventually play and scale to 1080i properly. Just an odd ball thing. But I can also tell, it seems like one of the earliest transfers / revisions of DVD.
