Hi guys, Im new here and have a quick question. I have my laptop connected to my amp through a y splitter. I dont really watch movies, i just use my stereo for music. I was wondering, if I used an external sound card with my laptop (Audigy 2 nx), than connected the splitter from that to my amp, would it make a different in sound quality?

It might. Here is a response graph for a typical laptop sound card.

Here is an external USB soundcard’s response graph.

The Room EQ Wizard programs recommends the Soundblaster MP3+, Soundblaster Live! 24-bit USB External and the M-Audio MobilePre-USB as some good-quality sound cards (can’t say for sure, but presumable one of those is the graph above). I doubt you can go wrong with one of those. I've been happy with my MP3+ card, and it was only $30-40.
