Steel Magnolias was filmed in Super 35....was it projected theatrically at 1.85:1 or 2.35:1?? The DVD is letterboxed at 1.85:1.

Spaceballs: 1.85:1(intended to be 1.90:1)

1.85:1 since Super35 allows widescreen ARs from 1.85:1 to 2.35:1.

2.35:1 is just the more "recognized" widescreen AR in Super35.

Sorry, Rutger, but I'm confused by your answer. I'm not sure whether you're saying it was 1.85:1 because you saw it theatrically in that AR, or if you're concluding that it must have been 1.85:1 because Super 35 allows for that AR all the way to 2.35:1. I know how Super 35 works, I'd just like to know how SM was shown theatrically.

The OIAR is 1.85:1.

I was providing a clarification on Super35 photography since some people might think that Super35 only allows for 2.35:1 widescreen ARs. In fact, Super35 allows for widescreen ARs of 1.85:1(Steel Magnolias) to 2.35:1(Air Force One).

The 1.33:1 full-screen versions of Super35 films are full-frame or open-matte versions. Super35 protects films from being cropped or pan & scanned for 1.33:1 full-screen presentations.
