Super35 allows widescreen ARs from 1.85:1 to 2.35:1.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery: 1.90:1(intended to be 2.35:1)

    Spaceballs: 1.85:1(intended to be 1.90:1)

    Air Force One: 2.35:1

Still, nobody answered the original question. Was STEEL MAGNOLIAS 1.85 or 2.35 in theaters?

1.85:1 since Super35 allows widescreen ARs from 1.85:1 to 2.35:1.

2.35:1 is just the more "recognized" widescreen AR in Super35.

    The OIAR is 1.85:1.

I was providing a clarification on Super35 photography since some people might think that Super35 only allows for 2.35:1 widescreen ARs. In fact, Super35 allows for widescreen ARs of 1.85:1(Steel Magnolias) to 2.35:1(Air Force One).

The 1.33:1 full-screen versions of Super35 films are full-frame or open-matte versions. Super35 protects films from being cropped or pan & scanned for 1.33:1 full-screen presentations.

Goodfellas was shot in the Super-35 process and it's 1.85:1.
