    Jessen:

Right click on the Start button, then click on Open. Double click "Programs" , highlight the icon of the item you wish to delete, then hit the delete key. This will delete the program icon not the program itself.

The previous method posted works if you want to delete something in the personal section (top portion) of the Start MenuPrograms. On my system, the Programs menu is broken into two parts.

My personal section is stored in:

    c:winntprofilesmylogonidstart menuprograms

The other section is stored in:

    c:winntprofilesall usersstart menuprograms

I can delete from either directory. As long as the icon has the little shortcut arrow in the lower left corner, then you're just deleting a shortcut and not any actual program.
