I always loved my original release for it's great transfer and good extras...how's the SE? Is it worth upgrading?

Re: the SE transfer, at first it seems grainier, but the image has more depth/detail to it.

It's granier because it wasn't run through a filter to remove grain. In other words, the transfer is more faithful to the film source than the original was.

I made a comparison between the old R1 and the New R1SE and checked out some scenes. Especially the "I find the idea of a thinking bug OFFENSIVE!!!" where the grain is worse in the background every time they show one of the two guys discussing the matter.

    SAME Transfer!!

    No doubt.

I actually picked up a brand new copy of the original release off Amazon sellers for $10 shipped.

I can't think of s single time that Columbia/Sony used a different transfer for a re-release. Even their vaunted "Super-Bits" are the same exact transfer. They are just re-encoded at a higher bit-rate.
Without a DTS track, I see no reason to upgrade. The first disc was almost reference material.

Columbia supposedly struck a new Hi-Def transfer for the Memento: LE and for the Desperado: Superbit. However, you're right about the rest though.

Starship Toopers also says on the back of the DVD cover that it's a "High Definition Transfer".

Yes, but it doesn't say NEW Hi-Def transfer. This is the same old transfer encoded differently. Less DNR.

I got the special edition instead of the old one and was not incredibly impressed with the extra features. I would probably not spend the extra 8 dollars now if I had to do it again.

I have the orignial release and at certain times through the movie, my center speaker crackles and pops. I thought maybe it was just my configuration, but I played it at my friend's place and it did the same thing. I've been looking at the SE. I think it might be worth my while....the copy I have now drives me insane! [IMG]

Any definitive word on if the 2 disc SE has better video/audio
compared to the single disc version or is it the same?
Any pointers to any good reviews of the 2 disc SE?
