My wife wanted to ask this question to find the answer!
Why did Yoda and OB1 disappear when they died, but Anakin (aka Darth Vader) and Quigon (spelling??) didn't? Their bodies were burned.
I haven't found the answer yet.
Thanks.

I believe either Lucas or Sansweet says this will be addressed in Episodes II and/or III. There is a reason for it, although no official explanation. That's what the word on the street seems to be.

Lucas has said this would be addressed, but I always thought it was obvious that both Obi and Yoda really "let go" of their physical being- choosing to die. Granted Yoda was suffering from old age and Obi was cornered in battle, but both seemed willing to die, accepted their fate, and let loose of their moral existance and escaped into infinity.
Vader and Qui-Gon Jinn both died from injuries inflicted in battle. Seemingly they were forced from their mortal exiatnce into infinity, and this seems to have been a different process from the Jedi's ability to disappear into nothingness.

Yah...Lucas has gone on the record saying it has something to do w/the age old line (ganked from the book) of...
"This is a fight you cannot win, Darth. Your power has patured since I tought you, but I too have grown much since our parting. If my blade finds its mark, you will cease to exist. But if you cut me down, I will only become more powerful. Heed my words."

To expand on what Greg said, Lucas (or was it an underling) said that it will adressed. He did give hints that the trick is not an automatic for jedi. Instead, it must be learned. Qui Gon had not achieved the level required to 'become one with the force' so his body remained.
However, according to the mythos, it is not permanent as it requires work to maintain that ethereal state. Yoda and Ben will not always be available to mentor Luke in the future (beyond Jedi). As they weaken, they will fade into the force eventually. It gets addressed in several of the books pertaining to the times after Jedi, but as the intros to those books are quick to point out, info contained in these stories is subject to change as Lucas sees fit.

Of course, the ability to vanish must not have anything to do with the ability to come back in ghost form because in Return Of The Jedi, Darth came back as a ghost at the end with Obi Wan and Yoda.

What ever the explanation is, I hope it's better than the one given for one's prowess in the force. Although, sometimes I believe it's best to leave some things unexplained, IMO.
