I liked this preview better than the first one.

I do wish the Jedi could wear some different clothes once in a while. Like, have fun t-shirt day sometimes. Dress how you feel day. Anything other than brown robes.

I saw the preview that is attached to The Phantom Menace this weekend (different from the new preview above), and it’s quite good. There’s a scene in which an assassin enters a bar or restaurant where Carrie Moss’s Jedi is with others. The assassin and Moss fight, then it cuts to a standard preview. But the whole thing is very effective.

Someone on screen says “Someone is killing Jedi” and that’s supposed to set up the story, from what I gather. I hope Moss’ character isn’t killed off right away, since she’s one of the most promising things about the show.

BTW there was an announcement before the movie that the preview for The Acolyte would follow the film. No one, other than us, stayed for it.

I fear that your fear happens in the first episode. I will be very disappointed if it does.

They should name the droid 'Merch'.
Thanks to BB-8's immediate popularity, it seems like Disney tries to market the hell out of any cute droid in their SW movies or shows and none of them have even come close to BB-8. I don't begrudge Disney for trying to sell stuff (Star Wars has been doing that since just before the first movie opened in 1977) but all the other droids have been minor characters compared to BB-8's fairly large part so the other ones aren't translating to people wanting electronic or life-size toy versions of them.

If you are saying that most of the 'cute' droids except BB-8 have been fairly minor characters, then I would agree.

If you are comparing all of the droids to BB-8, then I would argue that there have been some prominent droids that are much more than minor characters...

K-2SO - Rogue One
C1-10P (Chopper), Huyang - Ahsoka (Chopper is a major character in SW: Rebels, but much less so in Ahsoka)
B2EMO - Andor (borderline cute in my estimation)
IG-11 - The Mandalorian (limited, but important).

Yeah, I meant the cute little droids. I wouldn't consider Chopper or K-2SO as part of the discussion because Rebels had already started and Rogue One was already in production before The Force Awakens/BB-8 but D-0 from The Rise Of Skywalker, Lula from Obi-Wan Kenobi and I think B2EMO all had life-size versions made despite not having a ton of impact with fans or screen time.

Decades of watching Star Wars has convinced me that no two people would have the same answer for what are the “essential ingredients” to a Star Wars story.

I feel like this is probably an unpopular opinion but for me, Star Wars was never about droids and they were never essential. The original trilogy featured two characters who just so happened to be droids, that’s how I saw it. From my perspective, it was never a necessity that a droid be featured in every new iteration so it’s felt a little forced to me that nearly every new show/film seems to bed over backwards to not only include at least one but also makes them so vital to their plots. To me it’s unnecessary, I could do without them. I didn’t need them to be major characters in Rebels, Rogue One, Solo, the sequel trilogy, Mandalorean, etc. But obviously, many, many people feel very differently about it.

Party pooper! :)

My recollection is that Lucas intended for the droids to provide continuity between the various SW films (as inspired by the two peasants from Akira Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress.) By making them droids they would avoid issues with actors aging out of parts (or more morbidly meeting untimely demises). I would also point out the value of R2-D2 as a device to further drive home the anti-technology theme of the first Star Wars film. Not only does Luke turn off his targeting computer, he loses his most reliable companion at the most inopportune moment.

Having said that, I think the droids started out as a 'neat' idea and took on a life of their own in the SW universe. While I would agree that they are ultimately unnecessary, they add a lot of flavor to the environment and I am glad they are present.

I’m not at all bothered by their presence in the six installments directed and/or overseen by Lucas.

It’s more that - and again, just my own little unpopular opinion - that it sometimes feels like the new shows and movies are starting from a place of “we have to include a droid” and then finding inelegant ways to shove them into the story. It sometimes feels to me more like boxes being ticked off a checklist than something essential.

I think the inclusion of droids is just to let the audience know they’re watching Star Wars. There was a droid in Andor, but it was minor to the story and the show could’ve done just fine without it.

Yeah, I think it's fair to say that droids (which must be relatively inexpensive since they're everywhere) are just part of the Star Wars galaxy so they should be fairly prevalent in the movies and shows. I see Josh's point to some degree but the droids in the Disney stuff haven't felt shoehorned in to me. Again, I do think the merchandising has focused on them in a way that is not close to being equal to their screen time.
