Hey all, just got back from my honeymoon to find this thread still alive. 
Couple of notes --
1) one of my wedding guests showed up from Japan with a Phantom Menace LD for me. We sampled a bit of it before the ceremony (we were killing time with the groomsmen). My initial impression is that it is the best damn laserdisc I've ever seen. Man, that is a fantastic LD.
2) SE box vs. THX Definitive or THX faces discs: I always thought that the differences in transfers were minor, but seeing them head to head on a projector rather than on my 29" TV, the SE box is definitely better. I concur with all the above observations: the faces discs look a little overprocessed. Also, the PCM track on the faces Star Wars is nowhere near as good as the PCM track on the Star Wars SE, which is a shame, since I find the SE of Star Wars to be the most disagreeable one.
