Wow, a big deal if they're finally going to release the Original in box sets. Of course I already have them all, so I hope I can live without the extras.

Probably because the TOS sources are actual film elements, while i think the TNG/DS9 eps were shot on film, but mastered on video.

Great news about TOS! Glad I waited.

Actually I feel the reverse about TNG.YThey should give u the option of box sets or single DVDs.

IMHO, only 1/2 of the shows are worth owning so I cant see spending $129 for the seasons.

I also have a problem with the price of TOS - $20 for 2 episodes is crazy.

When they drop the price on TOS and release TNG in a way other than box sets, Ill start picking up the TV shows.

Yes, TOS was sourced from the recent restoration from the original 35mm elements. TNG and about half-2/3 of DS9 are sourced from decade+ old analog tapes. Restoring TNG and DS9, assuming they still have everything would require a completely new post process on every single episode(bajillions of bucks)

Jon, then you're not shopping right. I assume you're American.

Buy from Canada. I pay about $80/season for Trek. And you can find the TOS discs for about $12

Frankly I'm going to pick up the TOS sets if the pricing is the same.

IF the possibility of box sets for TOS does indeed happen, and IF they actually do add extras, such as the interviews discussed above, I hope that there will be a possibility of purchasing these extras separately at some time for all of us who already own the series.

    Warning you in advance

1- Licensing on the bonus material may not let them sell it seperately

2- I'd say that much of it hinges on Viacom aquiring Sci-Fi in the Universal sale

3- If memory serves, the TOS discs are DVD-5's, I'd guess they'd dual-layer them into less discs.

Unfortunately Ive gotten rid of my credit cards. Im out of debt and want to stay that way.

Both Media Play and Best Buy near me have TOS for $17.99.
The TNG sets go for $119-129

Im sure I can get them online cheaper, but until I decide I want another card, thats not a option.

Jon, get a debit card from your bank tied into your checking account. Just as good as CCs for online ordering.

    Surprise. Surprise.

    Not!

Now the interesting thing will be how much Paramount will charge for the original series.

I too have waited for this development.

What would make me re-buy the TOS episodes in box sets?
    1. Substantial supplemental features
    2. Original mono soundtracks (TNG and DS9 include original AND remixed audio)
    3. Correction of several errors in the episodes themselves (missing sound effects, footage reversed left/right)[/list=1]

EDIT: Does anyone have a list of those errors? I know there is a reversed shot in THE ENEMY WITHIN and a missing sound effect in THE CAGE. Are there any others?

The reversed images of William Shatner in The Enemy Within was intentional, particularly towards the end of the episode when he's confronting himself on the bridge. I believe they were done so that Shatner was looking in the "right" direction for a reaction shot. The only odd thing is in the teaser segment for the DVD, they reversed the already reversed shot of Shatner and Takei as they react to the sound of Fisher falling. Again, it was orginally reversed so they looked in the correct direction. But the DVD has the shot reversed so the part in their hair is on the correct side.

What's the missing sound effect in The Cage? I can check my laserdiscs. The only other glitch I noticed was the color of the phaser beams from the Enterprise as they are shot at the attacking ships during the climax of Journey to Babel.

You can't complain too much. This release so good, from the sound and image and the inclusion of the original music used on City on The Edge of Forever. It was terrific!

I'm just wondering what the MSRP will be for Voyager.
I don't see how it can sell as well as DS9 or TNG at the same price.

Do you think they'll discontinue the original TOS discs once the box sets are out? I'm not done collecting them yet and I'm not sure I will be by 2005 (so many other DVDs to get).
