Interesting thing about the audio in the 4k of the director's cut, which I had not noticed before on blu-ray. They've done such an excellent job with the audio track that every instance of ADR is extremely obvious. It's quite distracting.
The film really lumbers along. I'm thinking of watching it again and counting the number of minutes the characters spend staring at things without speaking.
Late in the film McCoy walks onto the bridge, stays for a moment or two, then leaves. Then he does it again. And again. I'm assuming he had some dialogue that motivated his appearances, but that has been cut.

Hey, why is the theatrical version listed as “unrated”? I distinctly remember it was rated G in 1979. (A bit of a turn-off for middle-school age kids who wanted edgy PG material.)

I was curious about that too. The LaserDisc of the SLV was rated G as well, I remember.

They went over it in brief on one of the special features. Basically when they submitted the Director’s Edition for a rating they didn’t submit it as a separate new work, so when it got a PG rating, the G rating was withdrawn from the theatrical cut as the new cut supersedes the old one.

"Thematic elements & sci-fi violence." Ratings weren't explained - just given in 1979 ...

Glad more wasn't done to the theatrical cut based on the few hack job "fixes" that were done to it. Still not sure why it wasn't left alone what with the DE getting the 4K treatment.
I was referring to them cleaning up some of the matte lines, nothing else.

My take is nothing should have been cleaned up on the theatrical cut with the DE being redone in 4K.

The DE does have matte lines that could have been cleaned up. I don’t have any issues with the ones still in the movie but I wouldn’t disagree with anyone who wishes they were dealt with.

HBOMAX is showing the Director's Edition this month. Oddly it is listed as a movie extra. So if you click on the movie on HBOMAX you will get the theatrical cut. If you exit the movie and check out the extras you will see a longer version of the movie. It's not marked "The Director's Edition" but the end credits do have "The Director's Edition" credits as well as a 2022 copyright.
The opening credits are different from the theatrical version and include an overture.

The second move'scdirector'd version is also an extra for that film.

The theatrical version always included an overture, from the movie theater to the first VHS copies.
