The BD version was announced for March at one point, and then at a later point in time, they added the UHD version for a May release. They’ve never been scheduled for the same date, and the UHD was a late addition to the schedule.

There was never a conclusive reason given, but it simply be a matter of replication capacity - there are fewer dedicated UHD replication lines than for DVD and BD. It could be that someone at Paramount realized after the fact that SNW is the first new Trek show to actually go through postproduction in 4K, and added it to the schedule. Or it could be timed to go with the new season - though for what it’s worth, none of the P+ Trek shows have had disc releases coinciding with new season premieres before.

My own guess is that they were on the fence internally about whether or not to proceed with that product configuration and once they made the decision, it was no longer possible to have the physical materials produced in time to have all SKUs coming on the same date, but too late to delay the BD version release without creating additional hassles.

I don’t think they actually know when they’re going to launch SNW S2 - but I have no idea if that’s a post-production issue or a scheduling issue.

Could have been a combination of scheduling and replication capacity. Paramount seems to be deep-diving into UHD for TV shows. Since late November, they've released five of them (Halo S1, Jack Ryan S1 and S2, Reacher S1, and Station Eleven). Maybe more, that I wasn't interested in getting.

On edit: Oh, and the UHD is SteelBook-only, so that might've thrown an extra monkey-wrench into the works.

I’m not sure Picard Season 3 is a 4K production. My display and streaming box indicate HD resolution, with an added HDR pass, which is how newer seasons of Discovery have been offered. My guess is that these non-SNW shows went through post production in HD/2K (basically the same thing), and that HDR was added afterwards for 4K-equipped households. I recall them making something of a big deal about SNW actually being a 4K production as a first for the P+ era of Trek.

A recent beta software for the AppleTV gave access to the developer HUD (which shows the actual resolution and bit rate of the source) and I was looking at this. What you said above seems correct.

Is it wrong of me to want it in 4K anyway? :)

I watched the first episode from the new blu ray last night. I had not seen it since it was first dropped on Paramount+.

i think I enjoyed it more this time. Initially, I thought it was OK and a great start, but I had some issues with how Pike has lines like; “Take me to your leader”. But I enjoyed the story better this time. Pike had to make a decision after getting caught and decided to show the people that he had a powerful arsenal at his command and to force the people to see what their bickering would lead to. Tied in nicely to the scene of Klaatu from The Day The Earth Stood Still. I also had a better understanding of Pike’s one on one with Khan.

The Blu ray looks and sounds great. Though I didn’t get a good sense of the audio being that enveloping. But maybe this episode didn’t have a lot going on in the surrounds. It was amusing to see the episode start with the Star Trek logo and animation of the Enterprise. I would have thought that would remain as part of the streamed version, so it’s nice it’s part of how the episodes start.

The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

About STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS

Created by Emmy Award winner Mike McMahan (“Rick and Morty,” “Solar Opposites”), in season four of STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS, an unknown force is destroying starships and threatening galactic peace. Luckily, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos isn’t important enough for stuff like that! Instead, Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and Provisional Ensign T’Lyn are keeping up with their Starfleet duties, avoiding malevolent computers, and getting stuck in a couple caves– all while encountering new and classic aliens along the way.

The Starfleet crew residing in the “lower decks” of the U.S.S. Cerritos includes Ensign Beckett Mariner, voiced by Tawny Newsome; Ensign Brad Boimler, voiced by Jack Quaid; Ensign Tendi, voiced by Noël Wells; and Ensign Rutherford, voiced by Eugene Cordero. The Starfleet characters that comprise the U.S.S. Cerritos’ bridge crew include Captain Carol Freeman, voiced by Dawnn Lewis; Commander Jack Ransom, voiced by Jerry O’Connell; Lieutenant Shaxs, voiced by Fred Tatasciore; and Doctor T’Ana, voiced by Gillian Vigman.
Season four of STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS is produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ animation arm; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout’s Alex Kurtzman, Roddenberry Entertainment’s Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth and Katie Krentz (219 Productions) serve as executive producers alongside creator and showrunner Mike McMahan. Aaron Baiers (“Secret Hideout”), who brought McMahan to the project, also serves as an executive producer. Titmouse (“Big Mouth”), the Emmy Award-winning independent animation production company, serves as the animation studio for the series.

STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Latin America and is distributed concurrently by Paramount Global Content Distribution on Amazon Prime Video in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Japan, India and more and in Canada, airs on Bell Media’s CTV Sci-Fi Channel and streams on Crave. The series will also be available to stream on Paramount+ in the UK, Australia, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and South Korea later this year.

About STAR TREK: PRODIGY

Developed by Emmy® Award winners Kevin and Dan Hageman (“Trollhunters” and “Ninjago”), the CG-animated series STAR TREK: PRODIGY is the first “Star Trek” series aimed at younger audiences and follows a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the “Star Trek” franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.

Season two of STAR TREK: PRODIGY is from CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ animation arm; Nickelodeon Animation, led by president of animation Ramsey Naito; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers, alongside co-showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman. Ben Hibon directs, executive produces and serves as the creative lead of the animated series. Aaron Waltke and Patrick Krebs also currently serve as co-executive producers.

The STAR TREK: PRODIGY voice cast includes Kate Mulgrew (Hologram Kathryn Janeway), Brett Gray (Dal), Ella Purnell (Gwyn), Rylee Alazraqui (Rok-Tahk), Angus Imrie (Zero), Jason Mantzoukas (Jankom Pog), Dee Bradley Baker (Murf) and John Noble (The Diviner).

STAR TREK: PRODIGY currently streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S., Latin America, Australia, South Korea, Italy and the U.K. and is coming soon to Paramount+ in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France as well as to Nickelodeon international channels, which are available in 180 countries globally. In Canada, it airs on Bell Media’s CTV Sci-Fi Channel and streams on Crave. STAR TREK: PRODIGY is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

June!? I see they want to spread out the original new material later into the year. This will shorten the wait for Discovery.

Just got my SNW Blu ray set for season one. I opened it up and saw two discs and was like, "They crammed five episodes per disc?" Then looked at the back of the insert where the disc menu is and realized there were three discs. They stacked disc two and three on top of each other! I've been told that BDs are made of sturdier stuff then DVDs; still, paying premium for a set like this, you'd think each disc would have its own tray. Am I overreacting to be miffed? Luckily, I had a three-disc BD case to spare, and have transferred my discs and insert, so all is well in my little world of collecting.

So the Steelbook is basically about better packaging? It's the same transfers, right? I've always wondered about the allure of the Steelbook.
Yes, the discs are the same.

Blu-rays are often packaged one on top of another. It doesn’t harm the disc.

I have thousands of Blu-rays. This is the first time I have received Blu-rays stacked on to top of one another. It may not harm the disc, but it certainly harms my psyche...

Then again I am the guy that moans with physical pain if someone handles an LP anywhere except on its edges.

I understand how you feel. I don’t like the playable surface in contact with another disc either.

I like to buy a Steelbook when I can for titles I like and I don’t do it for collectible reasons, I just like the art or if one is available for the title. I am surprised there is a difference how the discs are held in a standard case.

Yes, you are. (Well, you asked...)

I've never had any problems with BDs stacked like this.

I finally finished ripping the first season of Strange New Worlds and watched the first two episodes and part of the third, Ghosts of Illyria. I don’t want to binge through them so fast, so I am trying to milk them out longer. This series really looks great on these blu rays. It’s hard to believe the series will be that much better on 4K, but we’ll see.

On a hardware side, it’s fun to pick out some of the items on screen, such as mid century classic pieces of furniture and lamps used in Pike’s ready room. I’m into classics from the mid century of great lamps and chairs. They are expensive so I don’t have any yet, but hope to.

It’s also fascinating as I’ve been deep diving into the world of scale model making and there are people already selling files of the Galileo shuttlecraft seen in Strange New Worlds that are 3D printed.
