On my receiver, Yamaha rxv-440, it has a setting for room size. Small, medium, Large. Now my room is a living room with a break between it and the dining room. The break is a wall with a doorway and a "window". Now do I count the dining room in square footage? Or do I just measure to where that break is? Because if I count it, it sets it as large and it about 500 SQ ft. Which is bigger than large setting.

My suggestion would to try both settings and see which you like the sound of better. There really are no firm "rules". If you like the way it sounds, that's the "right" way.

I'm not familiar with that receiver, but from the description of your space I would not count the dining room. I suspect there is enough wall to separate the two well enough sonically for the purposes of the audio processing.
