I believe SpyBot's immunize function will guard against spyware installation - but only against programs identified in its database, so new threats can get through until the database is updated. Still, better than nothing and better than paying for the feature if you don't have to. I run both Ad Aware and SpyBot since their databases tend not to overlap 100% and things missed by one will often by caught by the other.
