I downloaded version 1.2 of this free program due to rave reviews from PC World magazine. I noticed it hadn't had an update for some time now. Also PC World now recommends version 1.3.
I emailed Spybot about this. This is their response:

    Hello Don,

If you are using Spybot S&D 1.2, I advise you to download the newer
version as it has some bugs fixed, has more detection rules and is faster.
The old version is not going to be updated any more.
You will find links to several download locations on our web site:
    http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=mirrors
    This one's a direct link:
    http://spybot2.zone-x.com/spybotsd13.exe
Please uninstall the old version first, according to this link:
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/27.html
    And don't forget to update.

Also download the newest detection updates:

    Best regards,

The new program is better. Before when I ran it, 2 or 3 problems would be reported needing fixing. Now, I've run it twice, and there were no problems to report.

I had a similar experience with Ad-Aware. I had version 6 installed and noticed after awhile that there were no new update files for it. I did a little snooping and discovered that there was a new build for version 6 so I downloaded and installed that and now there are updates almost every time I run it.

I guess it pays to make sure you have the most recent version of the software.

By the way, I run both Ad-Aware and Spybot and it seems to me that one catches things that the other does not and vice versa.

I've been thinking of adding Ad-Aware and Zone Alarm.
One step at a time. I like to make sure a download isn't mucking things up before I do another.

Yes, AdAware does catch stuff that Spy doesn't and vice versa. You really need to run both to be fully protected.

Agreed, I use them both, I am glad Spybot finally released the newest version...it was a rather long wait.
