Im new to the home theater scene. Can somebody tell me if sports and the like are better to hear with a surround sound system than just regular speakers off your tv? And if so, are the surround sound speakers and subwoofer part of the equation or is it just the front speakers used for sporting events? Thanks

They're better with surround sound. During football games you'll occasionally hear some choice words from fans and coaches. You'll hear things you can't hear from TV speakers only.

I let my receiver automatically detect the audio format but most of my football watching seems to be in Dolby Digital. I know that ESPN, Fox and CBS all use DD on their HD sports telecasts. The surround mix varies in quality sometimes but it's never distracting from the game. I'll double check later today when I watch four SEC games on TV and listen to two SEC and one Gulf South games on the radio/internet/XM.

I love HD sports in DD. Football, the Olympics, baseball, all are that much more enveloping when the surround channels make you feel like you're sitting in the stands.

Joe
