Aren't the Eagles the best selling of all time? They are not even on that list. Perhaps I'm missing something!

    Rubbish.

Rolling Stones at 9? Ramones at 2? Bob Marley and Nirvana at 4 and 5? The Beastie Boys ahead of Velvet Underground! Please. Radiohead at 15? It got some good groups on there-The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, The Beatles, The Stones, The Stooges-and then got some current popular groups that maybe good, but are nowhere near the best-Nirvana, The Beastie Boys, Radiohead-and mixed them. Gloossy page fluff that wants to tell itself it's more intelligent than it is.

This list is even more subjective than most "Top X of All Time" lists. What criteria exactly can you use to definitively say that, for example, The Clash is better than The Who?

If they had limited it to more "pure" rock n roll bands like the Stones, KISS, etc., it would be more interesting, but it's too large in scope to have any real meaning.

And Korn? That's a joke, right?

Dave Matthews gets no love from the media, yet he still sells millions of albums b/c his music is so freakin good.
i dont know that i'd have Outkast in front of other bands that weren't mentioned, like Alice in Chains or Soundgarden. i should make my own list...

Spin magazine always tried to out-cool everyone else. Notice the preponderance of punk bands, and smaller bands that "make a statement," more than they make music.

I saved the 1st few issues of spin and had a subscription up until about 3 years ago. I realized thenm, That articles turned into Paragraphs and Paragraphs turned into Blurbs. The writing got dumbed down to the point that I could not figure out what was a ad

I can understand some of it....but both the clash & pistols idolized the who and both of them are way above the who

That has to be one of the stupidest lists I have ever seen imo. Korn? N.W.A.? I listen to them but they just in no way ranked higher than bands like Rush or V.H. (imo again) it's just stupidity...

Even more glaring is they rank Blonide higher than the Who or Pink Floyd. I mean, come on! I like Blondie, but better than either of those two? Please!

Yeah, I've tried to read SPIN over the past few years, and it seems to me that they're too busy telling you that they're not Rolling Stone to tell you anything else. Frankly, I'm surprised they put The Beatles at the top; I would have thought they'd consider it too easy.
The list doesn't make a lot of sense, but I'm starting to get tired of publications trying to tell us that there is a way to objectively rank an art form, something that is inherently subjective.
Let's not get too worked up about all this.[IMG]

Well I assumed that Spin magazine is supposed to be about rock-and-roll. However, as was pointed out, they included rap! If you're going to go with all genres, where's Miles Davis? John Coltrane? Andres Segovia?

    Andrew Hamm,

How true, it is a funny list like all of these are. No matter what number you put each band at, someone will hate that choice. In fact you could delete the 50 bands here and put 50 new ones in and another batch of people will complain about that list.

We all know it's personal preference so any list will alway's be incorrect except for the one you make up yourself. I enjoy these lists but try not to get to passionate about them because each list is wrong to me and of course to each one of you.

    Peace,

    Rick

I think it's great that they put Bob Marley and the Wailers so high on the list.
