Over 20 years ago, myself and a friend from work decided to watch this on DVD with his parents, who were visiting him in Connecticut from Georgia. We picked this movie purposefully, knowing it was a guaranteed laugh riot.

As the movie trundled on with relentless frivolity, my friend and I erupted in laughter almost constantly. Nothing was not funny. His parents, however: crickets. Not even a chuckle. Finally, the mom asked, gently: "How do we know this is funny?" That comment, and the parents' shared quizzical looks, sent us more than the movie.

I did high school theater and the way our school set it up was that we usually had performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, a play in the fall and a musical in the spring. Now, getting through the day on Thursday and Friday wasn’t a problem since we had classes, but Saturday always dragged as we had to wait all day to do the show. It became something of a ritual to fill that time by watching Holy Grail, which we could recite backwards and forwards.

I recall one show we did where a sound effect for an explosion was needed, and as an in-joke, I used the holy hand grenade explosion for the noise.

I believe that was created for the DVD. It certainly wasn't on any theatrical print I saw or ran back then.
I think you’re right about that short film before the opening credits on the DVD- if this were part of the original film, Criterion would have included it on the laserdisc.

Preordered, using the link. Thanks, Ron. I’ll have all 3 of my favorite films in UHD (The Godfather and Pulp Fiction are the other 2).
