Ebay store Pop Market has reduced price to $139.89. Plus you can get an additional 20% off when you purchase two or more items. Columbia Classics Vol 5 is $128.12 at Pop Market before the additional 20% off.
That was a great tip. Even though my Amazon.com order offered free shipping, the Pop Market price was just $20 more in total, including VAT. And Amazon is not shipping my pre-order any time soon, or giving any estimate of when they'll have it in stock, so I cancelled them and bought from Pop Market. Christmas is saved - thanks!

My set arrived here in the UK this afternoon -it was dispatched from the US on Monday and delivered today. Must be some sort of record. Sent by UPS from amazon.com. Looking forward to delving into the 20 titles over the next week or so. Nice sturdy box as well.

My Amazon order is out for delivery.

Prices have dropped a bit at Pop Market. Now $135.37 for Capra set and $124.81 for Columbia Vol 5 both before the 20% off additional discount. That puts Columbia Vol 5 a few pennies under $100 before tax and Capra at $108.30 before tax after 20% discount.

My Target pre-order of this huge new collection arrived today (well packaged and intact). I started looking at the existing media I have of Capra films to determine what I can now get rid of in favor of the copies in this new collection. I suppose this might be of interest to others in the same boat as I. For now I'm assuming sight unseen that the new transfers will be as good or better than what I have, but this is more a question of content rather than quality. I am one who tends to actually watch and listen to the extras.

Of course the easy ones to retain are the Capra titles I have that are simply not included in the new set. This includes:
  • The Strong Man (1926): The 2000 DVD Harry Langdon ... the forgotten clown from Kino/David Shepard.
  • Long Pants (1927): Ditto.
  • The Matinee Idol (1928): The 1999 Columbia Pictures DVD. (It is a bit irritating that this one didn't make the new set, as it sounds like it's not a rights problem).
  • Meet John Doe (1941): The 2024 ClassicFlix blu-ray.
  • Arsenic and Old Lace (1944): The 2010 Warner DVD (maybe I'll pick up the Criterion blu-ray in some future sale).
  • It's A Wonderful Life (1946): The 2021 Paramount blu-ray (I've also retained my 1998 Republic Entertainment DVD for some extras that are not on the blu-ray).
EDIT: I should have included Broadway Bill (1934) on this list, since I have the 1992 laserdisc (!) of that one from Paramount. Probably slipped my mind because I have no LD player hooked up to play it these days. :) This would have fit nicely into this new Columbia set but, as others have pointed out, would have had to be licensed from Paramount who acquired the rights for the remake Riding High (1950).

Then, though, there are 5 titles I already have on blu-ray that are included in the new set:

I have the Criterion It Happened One Night (1934) from 2014. This has unique extras that are not on the new set, including the early Capra short Fultah Fisher's Boarding House (1921). I've to date also retained my 1999 Columbia Classics It Happened One Night DVD because it had unique extras that the Criterion did not have. It looks to me, though, like any significant extras on that old DVD are included in the new set. So that's one DVD I can give away.

The other 4 blu-rays that I already have are all digibooks from Columbia Pictures' Capra Collection line. They are Mr. Deeds Goes To Town (1936), Lost Horizon (1937), You Can't Take It With You (1938), and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939). It looks to me from reading disc covers that all of the on-disc extras on these older discs are included in the new set. However, the digibooks themselves are very nice with great photographs and essays. I am loathe to get rid of them. I'll have to think on those, but I'll retain them at least for now.

The feature-length Ron Howard-narrated Capra documentary from 1997 called Frank Capra's American Dream, that appears on no fewer than 3 of my existing disks (The Matinee Idol, the Criterion It Happened One Night, and the Mr. Smith Goes to Washington digibook), appears in the new set on the Mr. Smith Goes to Washington blu-ray. So that's not a factor in retaining anything.

Hmm. So that comes down to exactly 1 DVD (my older It Happened One Night copy) that I'll get rid of and save storage space on. Honestly that's not what I was picturing in my mind when I ordered this set. No complaints though. I'm of course getting 15 films I don't have at all (16 if you count the new documentary), most of which I've never even seen.

Mr. Deeds Goes To Town (1936), Lost Horizon (1937), You Can't Take It With You (1938), and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) are all touted as having Dolby Vision. I would think that the PQ will be much better than the previous 4K discs… Have you noticed a difference?

If this is addressed to my recent post, I'm sorry but others will have to answer on this point. First off, I've not yet popped any of the blu-rays in to even spot check them. But more significantly my older versions of these titles are not 4K, and in fact I don't have a 4K player (yet anyway) to play even the new ones. To me the 4K discs in this new set are a bonus for the future (perhaps). I bet I'm not the only one in that situation.

Bless Columbia for including all the titles on blu-ray. For the 5 I already have on blu, I'm not anticipating a noticeable PQ upgrade for the new blus -- I'm not even clear if they are new transfers for blu -- if they are and are better, great.

My favorite release of the year was probably assured the day that Sony first announced this set … and now that its arrived, I find my enthusiasm fully realized, not only for its content, but quite surprisingly for the packaging as well.

I’m usually not a big fan of “creative” box sets or digi-packs, preferring simple disc cases with cover art which I often transfer to slim cases to conserve shelf space. However the Capra set is housed in a very practical and attractive box disguised as a mini-cabinet which fits very nicely among standard cases without being obtrusive, adding a nice flourish to a set of shelves which I decided to organize by director.

The Capra box now rests comfortably in the alphabetized rows between James Cameron and William Castle … and by transferring the contents to slim cases, I was able to squeeze in all the Capra post-Columbia titles into the box as well.

I’m now only just getting started viewing the contents, which will probably take a few weeks … and perhaps, if I time it right with the post-Columbia batch, might get to Capra’s final film, the holiday-themed POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES, around Christmastime!

I haven't had a chance to watch anything yet. Are the 4K and Blu Rays discs of "It Happened One Night" and "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" identical to the films contained in the Columbia Classics box sets?

I have both of those Fox sets and still enjoy how important the films are. The Frank Capra set, which I have received, will be just as embraced.

It's worth noting that the version of Frank Capra's American Dream that appears on Criterion's It Happened One Night is cut. To be honest, I never made an effort to see what was cut, but the version on the Criterion disc is 96 minutes, while the version that's on Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is 110 minutes.

I got an 11/29 - 12/02 window for delivery from Amazon and that works for me. Realistically I don’t think I would have had a chance to start it before then.

My set is on its way. Amazon reduced the price to $140.13 + tax.
I ended up canceling my Amazon order and then bought it from the Ebay store that saved me more than $20 plus I saved another $18 in Amazon bonus points. It arrives today.

The eBay store's shipping to Europe takes a lot longer than Amazon does, but with the currant avalanche of 4K UHD and blu-ray releases flowing over in my living room, I'm just glad that this fantastic box can arrive later, rather than sooner!

I already viewed So This Is Love. Very little print damage. A modest, pleasurable film, and sometimes quite amusing. Good performances from the leads. First time viewing.
