    CARTOON ADVENTURES

    GERALD MCBOING BOING

    Academy Award Winner
Bouncing onto DVD January 3, 2006

Culver City, Calif., October 31, 2005 *Generations have delighted in the
whimsical adventures of Dr. Seuss¹s Gerald McBoing Boing, a six-year-old boy
who doesn¹t speak with words but communicates with sound and actions. Now
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment brings this little Oscarâ winner to DVD
with the release of Cartoon Adventures starring Gerald McBoing Boing on
January 3, 2006. This charming collection of all four Gerald McBoing Boing
animated short films will be available for $14.95 SLP.

Unlike most Dr. Seuss stories, Gerald McBoing Boing was written directly as
a screenplay and brought to life by UPA, the animation studio responsible
for the classic Mr. Magoo films. The first Gerald McBoing Boing short won
the Academy Awardâ for Best Animated Short Film and was followed by three
more acclaimed adventures. Recently Gerald McBoing Boing has been
introduced to a new audience through a new series on Cartoon Network¹s
    ³TickleU.²

    Hi Ron,

FYI - These were all produced as theatrical films and unlike other classic cartoons series such as the Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry, etc. these shorts never had their own long-running television series nor much exposure altogether on TV. No more than any other live action theatrical film that might have had the occassional rare showing on late-night TV at least. This is probably better suited for the "Film & Documentary" forum.

BTW; somewhat dissapointing that it only features the 4 McBoing Boing shorts when there are so many other rarely seen gems from the UPA Jolly Frolics series wasting away in the vaults. These are easily among the most creative and innovative animated productions of the decade and some of the best cartoons ever made. I had "borrowed" all of these cartoons from previously released DVD's (Hellboy & The 5,000 Fingers Of Dr. T) to make my own little compilation of 1950's UPA productions, but now that this new DVD is coming out (which I am very happy about!) I wonder what I'm going to do with my "Tell-Tale Heart" film? Since I refuse to buy the Hellboy DVD (didn't care for the movie at all), I'll have to find a new place to fit that short... Oh well. Would've been nice if they'd have included it (or Madeline, Rooty Toot Toot, Chris Crumpet, etc). It's not like they were stuck for space on a ~ 28 min. DVD! Kind of a cheap move.

Also, I hope the 4 shorts are at the very least, presented in chronological order as they are not listed as such in the press release.

Here's hoping this is just the first of many UPA shorts releases on DVD. Mr. Magoo, UNICORN IN THE GARDEN, MADELEINE, etc.

Nice that they're finally releasing some cartoons... but only 4 on a disc?

Columbia has their entire library ready to go, with fully restored versions of everything that exists.

I'm aure the only reason we're even seeing this Patrick, is as a promotional tie-in with the newly produced series that's airing on Cartoon Network.

I never really understood the point of that myself, I just don't see how they'd impact one another eitherway. I guess they're banking on the familiarity factor of the name alone. As if it would really take some run-of-the-mill 2005 Cartoon Network production to publicize on the name of Gerald McBoing Boing. Some corporate executives are really living in a cave...

It's a shame how little Columbia cares for their classic cartoon properties, what I don't understand, is why another media company doesn't attempt to license these out? It's not like Columbia is going to lose anything over a distribution deal.

If they even release any further cartoons, they will probably dribble them out, like the Three Stooges collections and HAmmer Films.
