Speculation on Adire's "Bigger and Badder" (1 Viewer)

I have no knowledge, so all this is pure speculation...

From the Tumult vs. Titanic thread, Dan Wiggins says of the Tumult:

There's obviously the Parathenon (sp?) floating around... I saw the motor sitting on the front desk at Adire when I stopped by this summer... very impressive. But this is beyond the reach of almost any consumer.

So my guess?

An 18" XBL-motored sub aimed even more specifically at the sealed/LT sub setup. Something almost impossible to port. Note the stir created in the speaker/sub forum on this site about the ACI Maestro (which could come close to replicated/exceeded with a Tumult/ADA-1200 at least in performance if not in ease of setup etc), and the only thing which is missing is perhaps the requirement for multiple Tumults/Maestro's to deliver the quantity to match the quality which sealed/LT subs deliver.

Adire has the the ADA-1200 sitting there tricked out for just such an animal, IMHO. A bigger more efficient Tumult which will require a considerably larger box, but within the range that most bassheads will put up with in a HT setup (4-6 cu. ft.).

My speculation ends with it behaving like a sealed/LT Tumult as far as frequency response, but being quite a bit louder. Bigger box size and driver begin traded purely for volume and perhaps FR (lower).

Again, pure speculation based on available pieces (ADA-1200, Tumult,), a few snippets about bigger, badder, xbl, and 18" floating around in a few forums, and topped off with Mr. Wiggin's known affinity for sealed/LT subs. :)

Thoughts?

My thoughts are- with huge units 18" and bigger-why not design them to be IB installed only,as the boxes required are non mobile in weight.

-Big Vas ,Moderate Qts, Low Fs for bottom octave and hopefully high ish sensitivity!

Cheers!:emoji_thumbsup:

Looks like one of your eyes is too! LOL. What I'd really like to see is a lower priced 12" XBL^2 woofer. Something like the Sadhara but a bit more reasonably priced, maybe somewhere in the $275 range. It seems like there's not much middle ground between the Shiva/Tempest and the Tumult. The Sadhara was a good start but it still didn't cry bang-for-the-buck like some other drivers out there (AV12). That's why when I replaced my Shiva I went with an AV12. I like 12" drivers because of box size. A ported 12" w/ high excursion can still go low and loud and I'm willing to give up some musicality due to the fact that I'm 100% HT. A 12" that I could drop in a 4-5 cu ft box, port w/ a couple of 4" ports and outgun everything but a tumult and maybe give me 90% of the Tumult's performance would be perfect for me. Am I asking too much?

what about the koda series subwoofers? they are mid line XBL^2 woofers with the 12" going for around 259. thought they are not released yet.

Stephen, looks like you won't have to wait for Adire. These sound really interesting:

I'm anxiously awaiting specs on the lower cost 12" (sounding like a Koda12 for $165). With the claim that the extra voice coil will allow a pair to present a 4ohm load to an amp and still have the Qts variable enough to make it work in a Sadhara style enclosure in the 200-300L range.

Although the extra Vd of the higher excursion 15 and 18 inch might have me stick with a single driver for my next sub.

I did some research on the Koda 12" and looks like it's lacking in both Xmax and VD compared to the AV12 I have now that only cost $145. It has a similar power handling and sensitivity. Am I missing a big advantage that I'm just not seeing? I'm guessing since it's a car audio driver it's really not meant for a home theater environment.

lacking in xmax? 18mm not enough? Its more than a shiva/dpl12 and more linear i expect
How about 29mm xmax? -But can u still afford the driver with that much linear excursion! Xmax is just SPL potential!

Its meant to be a cheaper alternative as far as i know

When compared to the AV12 it is lacking in xmax, especially when it's $100 more. It's definitely better than a Shiva but i don't see any category that it outperforms the AV12 unless the XBL^2 offers that much less distortion, and it costs a noticably more than the AV12.

Here's a quote from Dan when I asked a similar question.

Take it with whatever grain of salt you want considering the source (ie he is the manufacture of the Koda, but he also has a rep as being very honest).

Stephen,

As Dustin posts, not all Xmax is equal...;) Just like cars. Would you like a car with a 300 lb-ft torque peak at 5000 RPM, but that drops in a straight line down to 100 lb-ft at 1000 RPM, or the same car with an engine that has 300 lb-ft from 1000 RPM to 5000 RPM. Both have the same torque, but I can guarantee you one will definitely out-accelerate the other.

Everyone else,

As far as what the stuff is that's coming, you just have to wait a bit longer!

i'm also looking to upgrade my dual AV15. i want to go IB, but i don't think that will happen til i get my own house instead of renting, and i'm not sure when that will be. i want a 15" or 18" tumult killer, or the parthenon at a reasonable price.:D
