I haven't seen this posted yet, but

it looks like Artisan is FINALLY going to

correct that MAJOR screw up that was the

Region 1 DVD set of Frank Herbert's DUNE:

    (Old DVDs were non-anamorphic, missing

bonus footage, and were basically a HUGE let

down, especially considering what was released

    in Region 2.)

So here is what we get on April 23, 2002:

[*]3 Disc Set (Old one is a 2 disc set)[*]Anamorphic Enhancement (AR 1.78:1)[*]Additional 30 mintues of footage[*]Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1[*]Audio commentaries by Frank Herbert, Jr., John Harrison and William Hurt[*]Science Fiction Round Table Discussion documentary

with prominent writers, directors and scientists

including John Harrison, Richard Dreyfuss, Salman Rushdie,

George Lucas, Alexa Poryas, Ursula K. Le Guin,

    Michael Crichton, Charles Elachi,

William Gibson and Arthur C. Clarke[*]"Defining Messiah" documentary with religious scholars of all faiths[/list]

And all this with an MSRP of about $27.00 USD,

meaning that most e-tailers will have

it for about $19, as www.dvdplanet.com

does, which is where I found this information.

    Whoo Hooo!

This looks verrryyy nice! I held off on both the original set and the R2 release so I'll be ordering this one for sure.

Please correct me if I'm wrong...but isn't Frank Herbert dead? I thought he died in the late '80's or early '90's.

If this is true, then wouldn't his commentary be excerpted interviews ala the "Walt Disney commentary" on Snow White?

Frank Herbert is, indeed, dead, but so is Walt Disney and he "recorded" commentaries for Snow White and Peter Pan (well, they used recordings of his over the film). Perhaps there are similar recordings of Herbert, or they actually mean Herbert's son who carried on the Dune saga after his father's death. I have the Artisan version, but the series simply didn't do anything for me so I'll probably pass on this - perhaps Artisan should have held off until they got it right rather than sending consumers on another purchasing spree (they seem to be getting pretty good at pulling this trick. How many times has Stargate been released now?)

Damn, I finally got around to buying this a couple weeks ago for about 15 bucks. If the reviews are good, and there actually is 5.1 sound I will upgrade for sure. Hopefully the added fottage follows the book closely. They did a good job on the series but there still were quite a few gaps and differences from what was written.

This absolutely ROCKS! My vigilance and self-discipline in not buying the current crappy version finally pays off. Wow, DD 5.1 and DTS to boot--impressive.

Wow, this is just crazy! While at work today, I was thinking about a rerelease for Dune, and I was going to post a question about it when I got home.
Spooky. Time to buy a lottery ticket! [IMG]

I was tempted to buy this Saturday, but put it back since I already had 4 in my hand (BH Cop, Rat Race, Atlantis CE, Breakin Away), so this is very good news.

As an aside, does anyone know when SF Channel will have the sequel (Children of Dune maybe? I forget, Ask me about Tolkein) ready for broadcast?

If this is a "fix", will there be a way to get credit for the newer version if you have the old one?

I'm glad I didn't buy this yet, even though it just went to 15 bucks the other day at Wal-Mart. I'm really glad they're doing it right this time!
