I've just moved, and I'm hoping to get advice on where best to place the speakers in a challenging space (pardon the chaos in the photos - the move is still underway :) ). The only speakers I have so far are a Polk Monitor CS1 Series II center and a Polk HTS 12 sub - I moved from a space that had in-wall front and surround speakers. I'm thinking of getting either T50s or XT60s, and positioning them against the side walls at the same distance as the screen - thoughts there? The room is about 25' x 16', with about 19' from the screen to the main viewing area (the screen is about 6' from the back wall).

The primary challenge is in placing the center channel. Short of replacing my screen with an acoustically transparent one, all I can think is to mount the center from the ceiling and angle it toward the viewing area. Does that sound like a viable solution? I've read that having the center above the screen isn't ideal, but does anyone have any input on how bad it would be?

Lastly, the sub. Thoughts on ideal placement? Is it ok to put that against the back wall behind the screen?

Hey for the front speakers (T50s or XT60s), it’s best to place them slightly inward rather than against the side walls, angling them toward the seating area. Keeping the tweeters at ear level when seated will improve clarity. For the center channel, mounting it from the ceiling and angling it down can work, but it’s not ideal as dialogue may sound too high.

A better option is placing it below the screen and angling it upward. If it must go above, tilting it down as much as possible will help. As for the subwoofer, placing it behind the screen might result in muddier bass. A good way to find the best placement is the "subwoofer crawl" method place the subwoofer in your main seating position, play bass-heavy audio, walk around the room, and find where the bass sounds best, then move the sub to that spot.
