Speaker Package Recommendations (1 Viewer)

I would like some recommendations for a 5.1 speaker package in the $800 range. I realize that's limitiing. I've read over the Klipsch Quintet II and 12" sub specs. How are they? Listening will be 50% music, 50% TV/movies. This is for my family room, not my main HT. Will be paired with a Yamaha HTR-5950.

I am also considering a 3.1 set-up (no rears) as cabling for the rears could be a problem.

TIA

For 3.1 you could consider these 2 options:

SVS SBS-01 $225
SVS SCS-01 $185
SVS PB-10 $429

OR

Ascend 170SE $508
Acoustech H-100 $250

For 5.1 you could get the SVS 5.0 system and the Acoustech sub for $850.

The Klipsch quintets are decent speakers, but I think these other options will perform better. These speakers are, however, larger if that matters.

I'd go with the SVS package because the H-100 won't deliver anywhere near the performance of the PB-10, IMO. The PB-10 is also $379 right now, so even less than mentioned. I'd probably grab some Athena AS-B1s for $120/pr, C1 center for $139 (see Audio Advisor) and a PB-10 or the Mirage S12.

John, where can I get the PB-10? The SVS Website shows them discontinued and undergoing a makeover.

That means they are sold out of the remaining ones from the first generation. Sorry. They were on clearance becuase the new driver is coming out.

And looks like the S12 is gone also, but Vanns still has the S10 open box on sale right now. It says free shipping, but not sure if that applies to the open box ones.

Thanks John.

I ordered the SVS package sans subwoofer. I'll figure the latter out later.

Last time I was buying HT gear SVS only made subs. Things have changed! I'm looking forward to seeing what all the SVS fuss is about ;-).

You are 100% correct. While the H-100 is best-in-class in it's price range, it cannot compete with the PB-10. I only suggested it because it's the best sub that can keep him under budget.

I'm not saying the H-100 is a bad sub, just that it isn't a fair comparison :) The PB-10 would be the class leader in it's price range also.

SVS is taking pre-orders on the new PB10-NSD now (shipping 6/26) so I just snagged one.

Thanks again for the help folks.

Just wanted to report back. I am truly blown away by the SBS-10/SCS-10 combo and the PB-10. I ran the speakers without the sub for a few weeks just because I had no time to get the sub set-up. Now with the sub I am stunned. So is everyone else that hears them.
