Finally, your argument seems to be for full-range speakers + sub whether the speakers are powered or not, right? Why not get unpowered full-range speakers? All other things being equal, the unpowered speakers would obviously be less expensive than the powered ones due to not having to purchase the two internal amps.
If you compare a powered tower to (nonpowered) speakers at or below it's price range...generally the powered tower will have more output between 40-80Hz and more low frequency extension. Basically, a powered tower will let you effectively cross over anywhere between 40-80Hz when used with an external sub. You also get low frequency volume knobs for each speaker, as well as "stereo" subs. Using a built in powered woofer is simply a means to achieve lower extension and higher output for the loudspeaker. Try them out with an external sub according to my recommendations for setup...you might be pleasantly surprised :)

Unfortunately, Definitive Technology doesn't appear to agree with your recommendation. From their Web site:

"integrated subwoofers are actually better than a separate subwoofer"

So, again, you're using those DTs just as the manufacturer intended.

I think that built-in subs do have some potential advantages over a separate sub...but anyway...I have never seen DT claim that a quality external sub will not enhance the experience. Maybe you should call them up and find out for yourself :)

try this take your plowered towers put them as your surounds put your surounds as your mains if they are good satelites, put them on stands run the surounds (the towers) as small, split and run interconnects from the low frequency out put from your receiver to the powered subs in the towers. you will find that the satelites have a better and deeper sound stage the towers will make better surounds the subs will be aimed more toward the lisening spot, it will make a big diffrance, you got to try it. thank you, joe

Mike,
Not to confuse you even more, ;) but...
Have you considered the Norh line? The one drawback to them is that unless you can find someone in your area to give you a demo, you wouldn't be able to "test drive" them first. IMHO, there is nothing better in their price point then Norh. You could get a whole set of HIGH quality Norh's with your budget, and still have plenty left over for a great sub (such as SVS). For general info on Norh, check out http://www.norh.com or for a lot of great info from regular people who have tried them, check out http://www.harmonicdiscord.com. You may even be able to find someone in your area with Norhs on that forum. They actually have a forum category totally dedicated to Norh.
