We have in-ceiling speakers in our first floor family room. What's the best way of reducing the sound transmitting to our second story rooms above that?

Thanks,

Pat

Stopping the highs is easy. That can be accomplished with simple insulation. As the frequency drops, soundproofing becomes more difficult and more expensive to properly implement. You will need to add mass to the floor above. Whether that is ripping up the carpet (or other overlay) and laying down extra plywood or something like concrete backer board.

It's better to just concede the fact that in-ceiling speakers are a compromise in both quality and installation. To get unobtrusive speakers, you have to give up soundproofing.

Knew there would be sacrifices all the way around but was the best solution with the way the family room is configured. You mentioned insulation...just regular home insulation and packing that around the speaker and inbetween the joists? What kind of separation between the speaker & insulation??

Thanks for the help!
