Call me old fashioned (hence my name), but with so many outstanding 5.1 speaker systems out there, why would someone want a soundbar. I get the space and WAF, but they sound so bad. The only bar I want sound from is one I am drinking from.

The reasons are as follows:

1. Women like the simplicity, and as long as they can hear the dialogue, most are happy.
2. Too many men are wimps, and won't tell her that THEY want to experience the movie in all its glory.
3. Sales people at stores push sound bars because they are an easy sell in the store.

I've heard some pretty good sounding sound bars, at least as far as a two piece solution can go. All a sound bar is, is a simple, louder TV speaker replacement, with more bass. I've seen people that prefer TV speakers to the sound in a theater. Hooking up or operating a 5.1 system, is not only way over their head, but is also something that they could care less about. And yes Craig, a lot of women are like this, they just don't get it.
If there is a need, someone will fill it. Not everyone is like us.

Because of space i'm thinking of getting a 5.1 sound bar.

Demoing them in the store, they sound really loud and great. But when you connect it to your TV, the pre-amp level is a lot lower. And I do understand the space issue, my wife would never let me connect a receiver and speaker system to the TV in our bed room. My best advise: If you are going to get one, do the research and read the reviews. Get a pretty nice one with a more than sufficient amount of power. 300 watts is the absolute minimum I would recommend.

Have you looked at or considered the Yarra 3DX soundbar? It's designed to provided immersive audio using beamforming technology to create multiple "sweet spots" for the listening audience.
