Hi all, just got a new surround system. yamaha RX-V573 amp Bell HD receiver (satellite) samsung 50 plasma question, is it possible to leave the amp "off" and just run the bell into the TV and then at other times be able to turn on the amp and have full surround for the satellite? thanks

The receiver has "HDMI Standby-Thru". It will pass the audio and video thru the receiver, even when the receiver is turned off. You have to make some selections in the receivers setup menu to activate it. "Input Selection in HDMI Standby Through Mode" When the AV receiver is in HDMI Standby Through mode, the input source (Blu-ray™ Disc player, game console, etc.) for viewing on the monitor can be changed via the remote control. There’s no need to turn on the AV receiver in order to switch sources. You could also make a second audio/video connection from the Bell straight to the display and just switch inputs on that display.

Just a point of clarification... Gene is correct in that your receiver will "pass through" the audio to the TV even when the receiver is turned off, however, in order to do this, you need to connect the Bell set top box directly to the receiver, not to the TV. Your original post didn't specify if this was how you had things connected or not.
You will run HDMI from your Bell box to an input on the receiver, then run HDMI from the receiver's output to an input on the TV. There is no need for a direct connection between the Bell box and your TV (Gene was suggesting an alternative that many people have to resort to if their receiver doesn't allow standby pass through).
Hope it works out for you.
