Sound Fluctuates during loud music or loud movie ....DRC??? (1 Viewer)

Whenever I hear loud music from my ROKU player or loud passages from a DVD movie the sound seems to be go down. Seems like Dynamic Range Compression. I've done changes to the DRC on the DVD player and there are no settings on the ROKU player for DRC.

I checked the TV and there's no DRC or similar setting on my Toshiba TV.

I have my dvd, ROKU player connected to the TV via HDMI. The sound is output via the VAR out to my 2 channel preamp.

Is the VAR Output the issue ? Is it compressing the sound ?

Does any of that kit have something called "night mode"? That'd be the most intrusively noticeable form of dynamic range compression. But sometimes people think its supposed to dim the front panel displays.
