Background:

The people in the main house paid and controlled the cable Shaw feed. My apartment was just another room to the cable company. They moved out and my free cable ended. I built a DIY antenna and it didn't work. I tried just plugging the coaxial cable into the wall outlet and got many channels, all snowy and hard to watch. I believe what feed I'm getting is coming from an out of commission Bell dish mounted on the house.

My question:

Is there a signal booster that might improve this free signal?

BTW, my five-channel sound system is working great.

Flat HDTV over the air antennae seem to work well, taped to an outside window. I have one (powered flat antenna from Costco), it's slightly better than the multi-flanged lotus monstrosity bought from Target, and far less obvious in the living room.
