Sony Wega tv issues (1 Viewer)

over the past few monnths, my 36" Sony Wega TV has been acting wacky...

all of a sudden, random letters appear as text in one line in the top or bottom of the screen...like, "LULULUILOULULULOULIOIOIOIOULULIOIO"

If I turn it off, than on, it goes away. Then will randomly come back a few days later.

Also, the TV will randomly turn on a caption mode, displaying the text of the audio. I go to the menu to turn if off, and it is already off.

I bought this TV in 1999, is it starting to go on its way out?

Part of me hopes so....I got my eyes on a new Sony Bravia, and this could convince my wife it is time

Could be just a chip going bad or perhaps some circuit board. I'd sure hate to have to lug that puppy to a repair shop though and in home service is usually a hundred bucks trip charge.
