    When you have a chance.
If you sent your unit in to Sony, and the upgrade is free, more than likely you will get software rev 1.18. If you pay about $100, you should get a new (smaller remote, but much more useful remote) and rev 2.01.
You can check the software rev by turning the +/- knob (I think it's this one) all the way to the left (I think!). It will say the rev at the very end.
Also be aware, that there is an upgrade for the original crappy LCD remote. Improves the contrast a little, and allows the batteries to last much longer.
Some people say that the sound has improved with each release (I don't believe that), but there are some functional improvements as well.
As for the virtual 6.1 mode introduced by v2.01, all it did for me, was to push me in the direction of a real (homebrew) THX EX/DTS-ES set up by adding an external Dolby Pro Logic processor to my TA-E9000ES for the L + R rears, to add a center rear channel. Enjoy!
