SLAVES OF NEW YORK

Debuts on DVD July 26, 2005

Slaves of New York was the best-selling collection of bitterly funny short stories that catapulted author Tama Janowitz into literary stardom, alongside such 1980s literary icons as Bret Easton Ellis and Jay McInerney. The SLAVES OF NEW YORK movie, directed by three-time Best Director Oscar(r) Nominee James Ivory (The Remains of the Day, Howard's End, A Room with a View) stars Bernadette Peters (The Jerk, Annie) along with Mary Beth Hurt (The World According to Garp), Best Actress Oscar® winner Mercedes Ruehl (The Fisher King) and Steve Buscemi (Big Fish). Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release SLAVES OF NEW YORK on DVD July 26, 2005, priced at $24.96 SLP.

Synopsis

Eleanor (Bernadette Peters) is an aspiring hat designer who lives with her successful but abusive artist boyfriend. The high cost of rent makes Eleanor and most of her fellow loft dwellers slaves to their relationships; if only they could afford to move they could then move on. Struggling to make a name for themselves, they do their best to get by with what they've got. Trapped in cramped apartments and unsatisfying love affairs, they wander the city looking for the one thing that will set them apart and set them free.

On a sad note, Ismail Merchant passed away today at the age of 68. He'd apparently been ill for a while. :frowning:

Ah, my joy at finally getting this film on DVD is now overshadowed by the news of Merchant's death. But what a wonderful legacy of films he leaves behind!

I wish Warner would release SURVIVING PICASSO, another underrated Merchant/Ivory title.
