Sony HT in Box "Protect" Mode (1 Viewer)

My friend came over the other day and was telling me he was having problems with his Sony HT in a box, where if he turns the volume up, it shows "Protect" mode and gets no sound.

I don't own any Sony receivers, and am too far away to stop over.

Anyone have any ideas, because he is ready to smash the thing, and has not even used it.

I am willing to be that he has 2 wires touching somewhere. I have had a similar experience with a Sony piece of gear. At lower volumes it does not do anything, but when you go to a higher volume this happens. Even a little strand touching another wire can result in this.
