Keith,
I understand your position, and as it has been repeated ad infinitum (mine has as well), there's not really much point arguing about it. To my mind and ears, the differences in sound "quality" between two similarly constructed AV Receivers run in analog direct mode will be small enough that they should not impact a buying decision. This is my opinion, but then, my advice was solicited. I do believe that amps and power supplies and whatnot can impact the sound of a system, but in the case of mass-market A/V Receivers of reasonable quality, I don't think it's realistic. Frankly, I wish this were not the case, and only years of experience with a multitude of such products have led me to this conclusion.
My "assumption" (your word, not mine) about the 5ES was based on the fact that it is about as similar as can be to the 3ES, which to me sounded the same as the 3802 in Analog Direct mode. Note that I don't really consider this much of a leap.
Once again, I understand what you are saying, and if your experience has led you to different conclusions, well, great! We'll just have to agree to disagree, I think. Generally I feel that the sonic differences between these types of components are real but overstated, probably by necessity of language, if you know what I mean.
