I think I have decided that a 4x3 RPTV is best for me right now since my kids watch a lot of 4x3 and > 50% of my viewing will be 4x3, especially sports. I have seen the Sony's quite a few times and think it has a very nice picture. I don't know much about the Toshiba's but specs say:
New IDSC-Pro (Intelligent Digital Scan Conversion) (540p/1080i) and
New 16:9 Modes (Vertical Compression & Letterbox)
Does this mean the Tosh will do a 16x9 squeeze with a DVD and an HD signal like the Sony? Has anyone compared the Tosh 4x3 and 16x9 picture to the Sony? Does either set have any advantages or disadvantages?

From my "research", the new Toshibas would do the squeeze like the Sony. I have owned a Toshiba before and based on that experience, will probably get another one.
Sony has a great picture, true but so does the Toshiba. But the latter is priced way below the former. But the most compelling thing for me is that the Toshibas are more "consumer friendly". Sonys discourage their consumers to tinker with their sets. I read somewhere u can't do a full grid convergence adjustment on these sets (I'm sure someone will correct on this if ever). While the Toshibas are a dream to tweak. U can find out how to adjust almost if not everything on the set.
While I have yet to compare the actual images on both sets, my experiences as well those of others who've written on them sway me more. Besides, it would be kinda hard to see these babies side by side in their best. BB or CC would probably have them but they would be in torch mode, with all the glare and the crappy stuff they show off.

Matty,
So you have the Tosh 61H71? Can you confirm the squeeze to 16x9 for DVD's? Were there features other than price that made you purchase instead of the Sony?
Thanks

For me it'll be the softness of the Sony image versus the Toshiba, the improved lenses and maximum video amplifier resolution of the Toshiba and, of course, the price. What else is there?... except of course the tweakability of the sets via their user managaeable and accessable service menus. Still, the new Sony sets are very nice too.
