SOLARIS starring George Clooney and Natascha McElhone is now available on Blu-ray from Amazon.de (Germany) in a limited media book edition Blu-ray/DVD. The site reports the audio is in English, German, and French with German and French subtitles. The Region Code is reported as "B". I have always really enjoyed this movie so I ordered a copy of the Blu-ray. When I receive my copy I can confirm if the region Code is locked "B".

The story deals with a psychologist (George Clooney) who is sent to investigate the crew of an isolated research station orbiting bizarre planet.

Wouldn't mind upgrading. Was watching Stalker the other day and thought about this one and the original. I really like minimalist sci-fi, like these and Under the Skin.

I know it's heresy, but I may enjoy this version even more than the Tarkovsky version. I remember when the DVD originally came out, there was talk from Soderbergh about one day doing a different cut (the screenplay, which was included with the original DVD, is radically different from the final movie, and Soderbergh was talking about presenting an alternate version that was more reflective of what he had written). With all the time that's passed, I imagine that's probably never gonna happen.

Do let us know how the disc looks when you get it; if it's a good looking copy, I may upgrade.

I like both versions of this film, and have been hoping the Clooney remake would surface. Germany is fine.

I am in the same boat. I also like both versions of Solaris and will pick-up this blu, basically not knowing if it will ever surface in Region A. I also would love it if somebody got Soderbergh's Kafka out on blu-ray. I am a fan of that film and it is actually one of my favorites from him. I have a DVD of it which plays in all my players which I believe is from England but would much prefer a blu-ray. I thought maybe Criterion were considering it but have heard nothing about it in a long time.

I don't know, I would not say never because Soderbergh likes to tinker with his films so it would not surprise me if he had already completed this other cut. I kind of hoped that this was the hold-up not getting it out on blu-ray...that he was prepping a "director's cut" of the film and maybe we would get a special edition with the theatrical as well. I think the only thing that might stand in the way of that is the film is not that popular. So, who knows.

I have received my copy of SOLARIS and can report the REGION CODE IS "B". The video is much improved when compared to the DVD with vibrant colors and much more detail and depth. Included is a DVD copy of the original SOLARIS, a movie poster and booklet. The booklet is displayed in the German language so I am unable to comment on its contents.

I think that Soderbergh's version is a bit more accessible that Tarkovksy's, and therefore might appear more to modern audiences (who largely dislike having to think much). Nonetheless, it does retain the underlying mystery of the planet and its effect on the astronauts. It also seems to clarify (for better or worse) the visions one man (Clooney here) is experiencing as a result of the Solaris' cerebral influences. Both versions have their merits, and I will pick up this remake very soon.

I need to read the original novel by Stanislaw Lem that both films are based on. As I understand it, Lem hated the Tarkovsky film. I was also led to believe that Soderbergh's film is a new adaptation of the book, rather than a remake of the Tarkovsky film.
